Spacegunner's Review of ProMag Archangel Springfield Armory M1A Precision Stock

I love my M1A NM, but the walnut stock is just too difficult to shoot with in the three positions. Since I predominantly shoot the AR-15 platform for competition and plinking, the Archangel stock is the closest to the AR configuration for the M14.M1A.

Installation was a lot easier than what many of the other posters stated. After looking for the "interference", I noticed that there was a pivot-point on the barreled action, just in front of the receiver/mag-well area. Short story: I filed some material off of where the front barrel band hooks to the end of the fore-end until the rear-end pivoted with just enough tension to allow the trigger group to cam into place, without removing any material around the trigger group, or anywhere else. I will let it sit in the sun this summer to let the combination "settle-in".

The kicker for this stock is the adjustable cheekpiece. It is fully adjustable for shooting the M14/M1A with or without a scope. (The Gen SA 4th-generation scope mount allows shooting with the iron sights without removing the mount.) The adjustable length-of-pull will be helpful in shooting the different positions.

After mounting an old 3.5-10 scope, I took it out and shot the combo yesterday. The stock felt great, after adjusting the cheekpiece for the scope's height; everything is solid! The rifle shoots close to 1 MoA groups at 100 yards off the bench. I am sure I can get tighter with newer/better ammo components, and tuned loads.

With the Archangel stock, my M1A has climbed the ladder into my Top 3.
Pros:
  • Fit to rifle, shooting ergonomics, price.
Cons:
  • Pistol grip seems a bit narrow, but padding can be added.
Best Used for:
  • Medium and long range competitions, plinking, hogging.
