Most Helpful Positive Review Loving this unit
After doing some research and looking at countless youtube videos I took a shot at this unit. Could not be happier....I do alot of hog hunting in Texas and use this to scan rather than have to shoulder my weapon equipped with NV. I can clearly see hogs out to 500 yards+. Once you experience thermal you will never go back to traditional NV.

Buy it!! Best money I've spent.

I paired this monocular with an XD50a and the combo is amazing. You can spot game past 700 yards with no problem and IDing hogs at 300 yards couldn't be easier. I've ID'd deer at 700+ yards with this unit and it is nothing short of amazing. I'm having so much fun hunting at night that I don't think I'll ever see the sun again.

AWESOME....

Very nice system...lightweight, good clarity, easy to use. Comes with a nice case. I've used it to spot critters not visible with nvgs. No built in recording capability, but has an outlet for connecting a digital recorder/viewer.

Worth the Money

Spent a lot of time youtubing the reviews of this compared to the FLIR and glad I went with this model. The other reviewer is right, the youtube videos do not do it justice on how crisp the images are. The 30fps per second is also a great feature. Haven't had the opportunity to check, but I have no doubt can detect a man at 1,000 yards. I got mine for security purposes, not hunting, and this fits the bill nicely.

Complaints are the auto-adjust that makes a whirring sound and freezes the picture for about 2 secs when its first getting settled, about every couple of mins, but once you've been focused on a subject for awhile it seems to go away. And it is so bright that the eye you are using to look through loses any opportunity to be able to see in the dark. I'm looking for a small screen to jack it inot so I don't have to use the eyepiece. Great design choice by the way, having ability to source image to a separate monitor.

My only regret is I think for my purposes the color change for hottest item that is a feature in the EoTech monocle might be a great feature, but it's not a make or break feature since, from what I recall, this has "more power" than the EoTech.

The batteries that came with it seem to last forever, i use it every day for about 10 mins and in a month the charge indicator icon hasn't moved.

Puts a smile on your face

This is my first ever online review and also my first thermal imaging unit.

Very happy with this purchase. I spent a lot of time researching thermal imagers for varmint hunting and deer scouting. I finally decided to take the plunge on the HD38A. Once I figured out how to manipulate the control scheme, I was blown away with the clarity and accuracy of this little device. I definitely favor the white-hot mode over the black-hot. I also prefer the "high intensity" setting over the other two.

I decided to write this review after playing around with it on the porch this evening. I was just scanning the backyard and it picked up a cat under a bush about 75 yds away. I could see the cat licking its paws - very clear. When I panned left over the railroad tracks, I saw two does at the edge of a field, maybe 300 yds away. I used the 2x zoom to see if I could get a clearer look - even though the image gets a little more pixelated, I was impressed. I won't have any problems picking out coyote outlines when I take it hunting this weekend.

Bottom line - you won't regret the HD38A. Don't get stuck on the FLIR brand name - this is an awesome unit. Also having a 3 yr manufacturer's warranty is nice for the peace of mind.

OpticsPlanet.com was great as usual. I've purchased an ACOG and a muzzleloader from them in the past and they truly do deliver.

  • Ease of use
  • Clarity
  • Warranty
  • Sensitivity
Cons:
  • price
