Sturdy and excellent function - Samson Top Mounted Deployable Rear Sight

First, this rear sight is a fine choice. It has a sturdy body and a durable finish.

The rail attachment is NOT as pictured, but instead has a crossbolt connecting into a custom nut that tightens under the picatinny rail and into the body of the sight. While this is plenty sturdy, I prefer the slide-on design that is pictured, as the slide-on is a tighter lockup that spreads pressure more evenly when clamped down.

Also, the sight is designed so that the aperture is directly over the crossbolt. Other iron sights locate the aperture to the rear of a crossbolt, allowing for the rear sight to be located slightly further rearward over the receiver.

Finally, the finish on the aperture was glossier than I prefer. Simply checking the sight picture after mounting it immediately demonstrated that I could get a small glare off the aperture in bright light. Some shooters may find this bothersome. I'm thinking about running some 400 to 1000 grit sandpaper over the aperture to take the shine off, and if necessary, giving it a matte coating in the future.
