Sr. Shooter's Review of Sig Sauer ZULU6-HDX 18x50mm Schmidt-Pechan Prism PRO Image Stabilized Binocular

I love this device and use it just about every day. Have the 18x version. There is a mesa out my back door where a half dozen deer wander around. Very easy to track them 2500 yards away without any tripod or other support. Nice clear and sharp images.

Some observations. I have a very wide interpupillary distance making most binos unusable. This one, while maxed out, is workable for me. I ware glasses and they do work with them but I prefer to remove them when viewing for any amount of time. The eye cups extend out with a twist. I can then use the old trick of pushing the eye cups to the top of the eye socket where the bones make holding it more stable. Works great.

While it is easy to glass with this without support, anything will get heavy eventually. Bracing on a door, tree, fence, etc., helps remove the fatigue of holding them up for long periods of time. Note that this does NOT have a tripod mount. That is a separate part that wraps about it and costs $50. Have one on order so I can't comment on that yet. The focus knob is nice and wide and easy to run with gloves. The battery holders are located on each side of the base and a bit lower and fit well within your thumbs. The stabilization also allows for easy one handed operation, something that I really never did with my old set.

Speaking of batteries, I like the fact that they use easily obtainable AA batteries. I've used it well over a month and still on the first set so I don't know how long they last yet. Be careful, however, with the battery covers. They have a fold down lever that is nice but the batteries are spring loaded. The covers can fly off when unscrewed. Mine did when I first attempted to remove the plastic battery saver that comes with shipping. That little thing flew off, banged around then hid in under a wrinkle in a rug. Took a long time to find it! These covers can be a bit fiddly to put back on, even with out gloves so be careful swapping batteries in the field. I found it was easiest to set the unit up vertically on its eye pieces and push down on the covers. The battery orientation is molded right into the case. No need for trying to look inside the battery compartment. Note that the stabilization does not work unless both batteries are inserted.

The unit comes with pretty useless eyepiece covers (pretty sure mine are lost already) but nothing for the primary lenses. The front of the unit is flat so it can be placed lens-down on a flat surface. It comes with a lanyard but I tend not to use those since they traditionally have caused vibration in the wind. The case has the folded up lanyard in it so if you take that out, the binos can slide around in the case. I put in a microfiber cloth in there instead.

In use, I've found these situations where having image stabilization is great.
1. Hiking up a ridge, huffing and puffing. Keeping binos stable there is a challenge.
2. When its cold out, your hands shake a bit. (Those 10 cups of coffee I had for breakfast just might be a contributing factor....)
3. In heavy wind. Even using a spotting scope on a tripod, heavy wind can cause distracting vibration. This stops all of that, which is great, even in 25mph+ winds.

While not inexpensive, they work very well and are the ones I reach for now.
Pros:
  • Stablization is great
  • Can be used with gloves
  • Removes wind induced vibration
  • Fits my fat head
Cons:
  • price
  • Battery doors are fiddly
Best Used for:
  • general use
  • Tracking deer and hunting
