Reviews & Ratings for Sky Watcher EvoStar 80ED Apo Refractor
— 3 reviews — Page 1
I recently purchased the Sky-Wtcher Pro100 APO. I own several scopes including 8" and 11" SCT's. I was looking for a small lightweight refractor for lunar observing and imaging. This is the perfect scope for that purpose. The 4" main objective is more than adequate for both lunar and planetary observing. At F9 the contrast is excellent and the images are sharp. The overall build quality is good and the optics are excellent especially considering it's price point. You could easily spend four times as much for a high end triplet APO with not much more to show for it. You have to look really hard...

Since there does not appear to be a way to modify a review, here is an addendum.
My review is for the Sky-Watcher ProED 100mm Doublet APO which I purchased in August, 2014. I am still happy with it. Also, the photo does not do justice to the scope. The tube is a beautiful gloss black with tiny gold flecks. I have the tube mounted on a manual Explore Scientific Twilight I Alt-Az mount. It shakes some when focusing, but it is stable when using its manual slow motion controls. Best of all, the combination makes a fairly light grab-and-go scope. Note, when I bought the mount, it did NOT come with a manual, just a one page Quick Start guide.

I bought this telescope 2 1/2 years ago. I apologize for not reviewing it sooner. It really is a Great Telescope at a Great Price, especially when it is on sale. I own at least 5 other telescopes, from an 80mm refractor to a 12 inch Dob, and this one is my overall favorite. It is bigger than the 80mm but still portable, much more portable than the Dob, plus it has great optics. Though small, it is big enough to see lots of detail on the Moon and planets plus see hundreds of deep sky objects; but it really shines on brighter double stars and open clusters. I am amazed at how pinpoint the stars look in this scope, especially after using my big Dob. The contrast is great too. I love looking at the Pleiades and seeing the tiny stars and the nebulosity around them. The finder, star diagonal, focuser, and storage case are good to very good and the eyepieces are decent to good. The only downside is the dew shield does not slide for more compact storage. All in all, the package is a bargain, especially when on sale and with a coupon.
Highly Recommended.
Pros:
great optics
Very good to great price
Nice accessories
Cons:
Dew shield doesn't slide
Best Used for:
Moon, planets, double stars, open clusters
