The Speer .458 cal., 400 Gr Soft Point is not a "bullet of the week." It's a bullet that has been around long enough that most shooters that enjoy the attributes of the .45-70 have heard of it and a great number have used it. It's not a "trick" bullet made up of some exotic materials, nor does it have a new shape or high BC. It's a "Thumper" of game when loaded to the upper ranges of the .45-70. That's true at both ends of the rifle. That would be 1850 fps and up. From 1400 fps to the 1800 fps range, it's usually quite manageable in normal rifles in the 7 - 8 lb range. As in most cases with above moderate to heavy recoil, the shape of the stock greatly affects how the shooter perceives the "kick." In a Ruger No 1, its not bad at 1850 fps. In a Traditional Hunter with it's thin, curved butt plate, you don't enjoy the "Thump" at that speed. Recoil aside, the bullet has proven to be very accurate for me producing three shot groups of 1 1/2" or better at 100 yds. using good scopes. It's a big bullet, moving at moderate velocity, from a .45-70 or other cartridges. It has a reasonable trajectory out to 150, maybe 200 yds. if you are driving it fast enough. It will take anything you may encounter in North America assuming proper bullet placement. (Yes, that's true of almost every hunting cartridge.)
