Johannespaul's Review of Trijicon RMR Type 2 RM01 LED 1x65mm 3.25 MOA Red Dot Sight

This is such a high quality little reflex sight. I purchased it to mount on my home defense shotgun, which I have no doubts that it will stand up to the abuse. The dot is crisp and clear and the field of view is great. I definitely feel that I would go no bigger or smaller than the 3.25 MOA dot for the application I am using it for. The brightness adjustment settings are simple and intuitive. The 2 lowest settings are apparently compatible with night vision. I like how you can turn off the red dot as well to further conserve battery life. I also like how it uses a common CR2032 battery. It is also very light and compact on top of that.

The low profile picatinny mount this sight comes with is not so great, although it is well made and high quality. If you take it off and put it back on, you have to re-loctite and re-zero. You also need tools to do this as well. That coupled with needing to re-zero after changing the battery as well is pretty annoying (although changing the battery rarely has to be done). If you plan on rarely taking this sight off, the included mount works perfectly. In my opinion, you are way better off purchasing the naked sight along with the Trijicon RMR Low Quick Release Mount AC32076 (low profile - if you intend to mount it on a shotgun), or some other high quality quick release mount. I personally have the Trijicon quick release mount on the way as I write this. The mount also blocks the sights on my shotgun so I will have to laser sight it. There apparently is a mount made by Scalarworks that solves obscuring the iron sights, but it means the sight will be very difficult to remove.

This sight is also extremely expensive. Even rivaling my Eotech in price. Aside from the weight and size, I feel the Eotech is a much better primary sight for a rifle, for the money, compared to this sight and I don't think I would ever mount one of these on one unless I was using it as a secondary sight. For a pistol or shotgun, this sight is perfect as a primary sight, in my opinion.

Despite some of the cons, they melt away when using this sight. You can tell a huge difference compared to cheaper reflex sights in terms of dot clarity and the quality of the glass. The construction is high quality and rugged and will most definitely stand up to the abuse of whatever you mount it on. On my shotgun, it just feels right compared to the Eotech 552 I originally thought of mounting on it (the British Army uses the Eotech 552 on my shotgun). It also is small and light enough to not risk the rail being sheered off the shotgun (which has been reported with my shotgun, although the details are unclear if the rails were replaced with the shell carrier type and were improperly installed). I would definitely recommend as a primary sight for a pistol or shotgun, but I feel there are way better choices for a rifle at this price range, unless weight and size are a huge concern.
Pros:

  • field of view
  • high quailty

Cons:

  • Mount a little finicky, but secure.
  • Battery access requires removing optic, reinstalling and rezeroing

  • Shotgun
