Ultimate Volunteer's Review of Vortex Razor HD 27-60x85mm Porro Prism Spotting Scopes

You have a lot of choices today in the spotting scope market and if you don't do some research you can end up with something less than what you want. I had it happen on a previous purchase with a Meopta HD80, it was a good scope but just didn't do all I expected for what it cost. After Having watched videos, going to forums, reading articles & reviews on a lot of scopes, for the money everything pointed to the Razor . I took it out to the range and at 300 yards (where I was having trouble with my current spotter), I was able to make out my targets clearly. The range I'm a member of only has 300 yards so I couldn't check targets at any further distances. I have looked at trees on the mountains when I live and it gives a good clear image of the scenery. I will say that I have noticed at the high end of the magnification it's not quiet as clear & crisp than at the 40-50 power setting (I have noticed that on other scopes as well). The Razor is well built (a little heavy if you plan on hiking in the woods or carrying it while hunting, you may want to look at the smaller 22-48x65 model), it has a European look to it, a non slip texture covers the scope and a large focus wheel for easy adjustments. It comes with a cover or skin (which ever you call it), this thing is extremely hard to put on. For the money I think you would have to get into the mid 2K's to get a better scope and that's just a little to rich for my blood. I have several Vortex products and haven't had any issues with any of them, with the Vortex warranty & reputation (they have excellent customer service) you will find it hard to beat this scope in it's price range.
Pros:
  • rugged construction
  • Excellent value
  • image quality
  • Quality glass
Cons:
  • The cover it comes with is to small
Best Used for:
  • Target shooting
  • nature watching
