Thomas Hanke's Review of Vortex Spitfire 1x-AR Prism Scope

Have been looking and thinking about an AR optic for a long time. Too many choices and options out on the market. Saw this optic at a big box store on a mock rifle mount. What caught my attention was how quick my eyes picked up the target and sight picture together. And this was without the sight illuminated, just the etched circle reticle. My son also looked at this and we both purchased one from Optics Planet as they had the best price and free shipping. Took it to indoor range and could only sight it in to 25 yards but the folks there helped with where it should be shooting at 25 yards for a zero at 100 yards. Once the outdoor ranges open here in central Wisconsin this spring I will definitely be checking it at 100 yards. Will most likely switch the elevation turret after that with the extra yardage turret that came with the optic. At this point don’t know how much long range shooting I will be doing with it, but it will be a nice feature to use with this optic. I wear prescription glasses and have a stigmatism and this sight is great. Had a couple guys at work look at it after I mounted it on my AR and they really liked it as well. A couple of them actually have the 3x version for coyote hunting mounted on an AR platform they think is awesome as well. Shot groups were very good for me as well as my son’s just built AR. I have an MP 15 Sport II with the A2 front sight, this is a full or absolute co-witness so you do see the front sight in your view but I don’t feel it’s a big deal. Your eyes focus on the circle reticle anyway. I did have to remove the rear MBUS sight though to get the full field of view through the optic. Was reluctant to do this but since the reticle is etched it works just as well as flip-up back up sights. Plus if the optic is so messed up I can’t look through it, the back up sights would be worthless at that point as well. It works for now and who knows what other modifications will be made in the future. For now wanted to keep my AR pretty simple and very user friendly. Definitely worth every penny but didn’t break the bank either.
