Air's Review of Vortex Spitfire 1x-AR Prism Scope

When I discovered that I had astigmatism, I realized that optic choices for my SBR were more limited. Fortunately, I found the Spitfire.

There are several reasons I'm glad I did.

First, there's the diopter. Since it's a prism sight, you can focus the eyepiece lens to match up with your eyes, so you can choose to use it with or without glasses. It's easy to adjust, and stays where you set it.

On the subject of vision, the Spitfire lets you choose between red and green illumination on the fly, which is a big deal for me because green is easier for my eyes to see. Whichever color you choose, the reticle is bright, crisp, and clear. Bonus: If you are shooting in daylight, you don't even need the illumination to see the reticle clearly.

Another reason I like the Spitfire is that the reticle is a dot with concentric rings around it. Your mileage may vary, but I find that the rings make it easier to process your sight picture, especially with both eyes open.

The pushbutton interface is also easy to use, even with gloved fingers. Push either the up or down arrow on the back, and the reticle illuminates. Hold both arrows to turn it off, or hold both of them even longer to switch between red and green light.

Right out of the box, it feel substantial without being heavy. The mount is rock-solid, and easy to attach to a picatinny rail with the included star-bit wrench. (Can I say Torxâ„¢ on here without violating a trademark? I guess we'll find out.)

The use of a standard AAA battery is a nice touch as well.

Flip-up covers are included in the box, as is a cool extra: It comes with an optional turret that you can swap out to adjust for bullet drop based on the average 5.56 round.

And, of course, there's Vortex's amazing warranty. They back up their products, no questions. If it breaks, send it to them and they fix or replace it. No tricks, no conditions, no hassle. I feel good about giving my money to a company that takes such pride in customer service.

Two things to be aware of:

1. The eye relief is not unlimited. However, if you are careful and take your time mounting it, you will find the ideal place on your rail. From then on, it's just intuitive point-and-shoot.

2. Yes, it is made in China, but Vortex isn't the only optics manufacturer that does this. Besides, it makes this really good prism sight even more affordable. And the company itself is based in Wisconsin, so it's not like you're sending all of your money overseas.
