lgkl's Review of Vortex Viper 1x24mm Reflex Red Dot Sight
I did a lot of research before buying the Viper for my SW MP 9 CORE. I used the #5 plate that came with the gun to mount the Viper. Took me longer to remove the cover plate on my slide than it did to mount the Viper.
I like all the features except two. The battery mounts underneath the sight and means you have to remove the sight to change it. And the adjustments have lock screws that are hard to get to because the rear sight on my model gun is in the way. But, I can easily live with both of these given the price of the Viper compared to other 'like' sights.
Viper is solidly made and robust. Brightness adjustments are easy to do and I keep mine on low. Turning on/off is easy and hard to do by accident. This sight co-witnesses very well. I contacted Vortex and was told the Viper is 'mechanically zeroed' and I found I did not have to make any adjustments to windage or elevation to 'zero' mine.
In my research there was a choice of sized 'dots' in MOAs to pick from among the makers. The Viper came with a 6 MOA dot size and I am perfectly happy with its size. At 25 yards it covered a bit over an inch and was easy to see. That is the longest distance I figure to shoot a pistol. So I'd say, if you're deciding, a 6 MOA is a good choice.
Couldn't be happier and I got a prompt reply from Vortex to my question (about what distance the Viper was set at for zero). This sight does whatever the other sights of its kind does and does it at the best price I found. Highly recommend it.
Apologize for lack of brevity in this review but it is because I am a very happy customer. With the product, price, customer service and OP always gets things shipped promptly.
