Ring dilemma

by Icky, Verified Owner from UT, United States Written on January 29, 2025
I originally ordered a set of Ruger rings from Optics Planet for my Ruger M77 MK2 rifle, which for this receiver they are two different heights. I figured Ruger rings for a Ruger rifle was the way to go to ensure a good fit for this proprietary receiver. Boy was I wrong! The Ruger rings did not work at all as the taller ring in the rear was still about .100 too short. So I searched for an alternative and found these Warne Maxima rings. I was quite skeptical as I wasn't certain that I liked the looks of Warne rings and was questioning the functionality of vertical split rings. Optical Planet customer service was great to work with and after some contemplation I decided to give these rings a try and they helped me with the return and replacement. Heck, I figured that they couldn't be any worse than the Ruger rings. If these rings didn't work, my next step would have been to get the receiver drilled and tapped for a picatinny rail but I never intended on having to change out the scope ever again so I wanted to give these rings a shot first. Well, I am sure glad that I did. It was a different type of ring installation process but not difficult at all and they fit perfectly. After the installation was completed, I actually don't mind the look of the rings at all and the setup is very solid. They are definitely a better built ring set than the Ruger rings and I am happy with the end result.
Thank you Optics Planet!!

Just say no

I’m not a fan of the Ruger mounting system to begin with - it’s different for the sake of being different, a pic rail is way better. That said I bought a Ruger 77/44 and needed 30mm rings for the optic I want to use, so I bought these. The recoil lug isn’t attached, it’s a separate piece that gets sandwiched between the 2 halves, which are split vertically, not horizontally. Which is again different for the sake of being different. These things were a pain in the butt to get on. Trying to keep the recoil lug in place, while your setting the optic in and getting it to grab right on the Ruger mount. At the end, I couldn’t get my optic to zero, it didn’t have enough elevation adjustment. I think it’s because this stupid recoil lug was sitting in the slot correctly. I remounted the optic 3 times before I gave up. I now have a Burris Ruger to pic rail adapter on the way and standard horizontally split rings. Garbage.

Great rings

by Adam, from TX, United States Written on August 18, 2020
Solid rings, very sturdy. High quality fit and finish. Low profile top half, which doesn’t obstruct line of sight to the scope turrets. Used the 15R7M to mount a 50mm objective to a Ruger M77 at the perfect height.

Maxima rings for Ruger M77 Mk II

by Adam, from TX, United States Written on January 12, 2020
Solid rings, great finish, quality machining. Only drawback - installation is somewhat tricky due to the vertical design. The rings have to be loosely assembled on the scope first (don't forget shorter ring towards the muzzle, taller ring towards the butt), then set on the Ruger rails while making sure the recoil tabs don't fall out the bottom of either ring set. The plus side to the vertical split is that torquing the screws does not twist or cant the scope after leveling the reticle, and you don't have to worry about setting an equal gap like most horizontally split rings. In case it helps someone else, M77 Mk II sporter rifles with 50mm objectives need medium height rings. I bought high and had to exchange for medium.
Pros:
  • Quality
  • Affordable
Cons:
  • None

30mm scope rings

by Nathan, from WI, United States Written on July 27, 2019
Very robust scope rings way better than ruger's factory ones. The fit was perfect as well,I will definitely buy another set in the future. Scope rings come with a recoil lug just like the original ones.

Warne 30mm rings for Ruger M77

by Jeff Gu, from NE, United States Written on November 9, 2017
These rings are dual height, to attach directly to the Ruger M77 (Mark II, Hawkeye) rails machined into the receiver. They were easy to install, excellent quality, required no lapping, and the scope's reticle level remained solid when tightening the rings. They are split vertically and have a less cluttered look. During installation, you do have to keep the recoil lug in place while mounting the rings to the gun, but once you sort it out on the first one it is easy to get the second one with one attempt. A minor inconvenience for rings of this quality. I have Warne rings on .17 HMR, .22-250 REM and .204 Ruger guns and have had no issues whatsoever with them.
Pros:
  • Set is correct for stock M77 rail.
Cons:
  • A bit annoying keeping recoil lug in place during installation.
Best Used for:
  • A clean look and simple install.
