Haven't used it yet, but for the money, this style has been around for a long time. Absolutely would buy again.

I bought this vise based on two things, price and Wheeler products reputation. This vise did not disappoint. As you can imagine, removing a barrel from a 140 year old rifle has its challenges. Upon receipt of the Wheeler barrel vise I initially tried to remove the barrel with the supplied blocks. No matter how much force I put on the oak blocks, the barrel rotated. I tried lightly heating the barrel and I also stood the barrel up and soaked the threads in penetrating oil. Still no luck, so I went out and purchased a small rosin bag from my local sporting goods store, the type used by baseball players. After liberally applying a coating of rosin, I clamped the barrel back into the Wheeler barrel vise and attached my home made action wrench to the receiver. A couple of thumps on the handle of the action wrench and I felt t he barrel pop loose from the action. I completed separating the receiver from the barrel. Once I applied the rosin to the oak blocks, as recommended by the instruction the Wheeler barrel vise worked flawlessly. I wish I would of had this barrel vise a couple of months ago to help me with the removal of a stuck breech plug from a Brown Bess barrel I had in the shop.
Pros:
- price construction quality

Very heavy duty. I appreciate the wood and being able to customize the vice for each barrel.

After struggling to remove the muzzle device on my MR762 with the bench vise I had, I gave these a try. I did buy 2 for extra support, and couldn't be happier with the result. The precut wood blocks were the perfect size for the barrel. The muzzle device was still a bear to remove, but i have no doubt I wouldn't have been successful without. Would definitely recommend!

This is another well made product from Wheeler Engineering! It should hold about any barrel profile and the bushings should work on about any barrel along with Rosin to hold the barrel from slipping while tightening or loosining the barrel! Will use it to install a new 7mm barrel on a VZ-24 Mauser 98 receiver!

The only thing negative I have to say is there is a small crack already in one of my oak blocks. Still was able to remove one barrel from action and put another barrel back on. Overall I’m pleased and look forward to using it more In the future.

I had a barrel glued on an older model 700. I broke the oak blocks on my homemade vice. After several unsuccessful attempts to clamp barrel, I finally gave in and purchased this vise to do the job. It worked perfectly.

Swapped out my .308 barrel on my savage 10 bat with a criterion 6.5 creedmore varmit barrel, vise did what it was suppose to do. You have to really crank down on to it for it to hold the barrel sufficiently, I didn't have any rosin, like some people used, but it worked fine anyway. I added washers under the nuts on the top plate so there wouldn't be any gawling. Just clamped the vise to my bench with 'c' clamps and it was good enough to hold it tightly. Would have given it 5 stars if it had better bushings, but the oak bushings will work fine for me, I won't be replacing barrels frequently. All in all I am happy with this vise.

I have used pipe vises to take off barrels in the past. With this bad boy it's much easier to put the clamp on. Get a rosin bag from a sports store, cut it open and use that on the blocks. That works every time.
Pros: heavy duty
Cons: none, could be chrome and be engraved for $20 more
