A shotgun stock has two parts: the buttstock and the forend. The buttstock is the rear portion that you put up against your shoulder to aim and absorb recoil. The forend is the portion under the barrel that you use to hold and stabilize the shotgun with your free hand. On pump-action shotguns, the forend also serves as the mechanism to cycle the action, ejecting the spent shell and loading another into the chamber.
The two basic types of shotgun stocks are traditional and pistol grip. A pistol grip stock is usually considered a tactical stock, although they are sometimes used for hunting when mounted on turkey shotguns or slug guns. A variation of the pistol grip stock is a folding stock, that allows the buttstock to be folded alongside the receiver of the shotgun for easier transportation. Some shotguns do not have a buttstock at all, and only use a pistol grip and a forend. Such shotguns are only tactical shotguns, usually used for home defense, and do not have any practical hunting applications.
