A knife thrower is part artist, part scientist, and if they're dedicated to practicing then they most often wind up being a thrower with an impressive level of skill and ability. When the blade thunks into your first bullseye, it's an indescribable feeling of accomplishment. When you start landing tighter groups and really getting the hang of it, you're hooked.![]()
For some people, they get the hang of being a thrower by starting out with a throwing axe like a tomahawk or hatchet that's specifically designed for the purpose. This is because they tend to have a wider blade, are blade-heavy, and the longer handle allows more power to be applied which is more likely to stick when it hits.
That is determined entirely by where you live. In the United States, they are legal, but there are many states, counties, and cities where throwing knives, throwing axes, throwing stars, and many other kinds of knives are illegal. It's very important to know if you can own or use certain types of knives before you buy, own, use, or carry one in your jurisdiction.
Technically, any knife can be thrown. Whether or not it comes anywhere near your target, or sticks if it does hit, is an entirely different story. Knives that aren't designed for throwing can also be damaged even after the first throw, like folding pocket knives.
The best throwing knives have certain elements of design that make them specific to the sport. They will have a full tang, meaning the metal of the blade extends all the way through the handle and a one-piece design. The 3 basic types are handle-heavy, blade-heavy, or balanced knives. A handle-heavy knife has the weight in the handle, a blade-heavy thrower has a much lighter handle, and balanced knives have the weight equally distributed between the blade and the handle. Any can be very accurate with a little practice. Some throwers have a preference, and others enjoy practicing will all 3 kinds.
If you're just getting started in the sport, you'll probably want to start out with a throwing knife set. These are usually 2- to 5-piece throwing knife sets. The advantage here is that you can maintain a consistent position and throw multiple times as you practice without having to go retrieve your knife in between each attempt. You may also want to put together your own combo thrower set with a variety of sizes to see what works best for you. Some will have a spear point, and others will have a cleaver shape.
