Designed in 2007 by Federal Premium, the .327 Federal Magnum is also known as 327 Fed Mag, 327 Federal, 327 Mag, and 327 Magnum. There have been many manufacturers of 327 Federal Mag revolvers, including Charter Arms, Freedom Arms, Taurus, USFS (United States Fire Arms). Ruger has made the most models, like the Ruger SP101, Ruger LCR, GP100, and Single-Seven. Recently some lever-action rifles and carbines have come onto the market, and there are even a few single-shot rifles out there.

What ammo can a .327 revolver shoot?

According to SAAMI (Sporting Arms & Ammunition Manufacturer's Institute), the U.S. authority on Generally Accepted Firearms & Ammunition Interchangeability that can be fired through certain calibers, a revolver chambered in .327 Federal Magnum (327 FED MAG), can safely shoot the following handgun ammunition cartridges:

  • 32 H&R Magnum (32 H&R MAG)
  • 32 Smith & Wesson (32 S&W)
  • 32 Smith & Wesson Long (32 S&W Long, 32 S&WL)

Always check the firearm manufacturer's specifications before firing any ammunition through any firearm! Failure to do so may result in firearm damage, injury, or death.

What is a .327 Magnum compared to?

For self-defense, the 327 Federal Mag ranks very highly. With less recoil than a .357 Magnum, but with more muzzle energy and velocity than more common personal defense calibers like the 9mm Luger, it fills the gap between the two quite nicely.

How powerful is a .327 Magnum?

A .327 Federal Magnum can be loaded to higher pressures than the .32 H&R Magnum that preceded it, yet has far less felt recoil than a comparable .357 Magnum. Those higher pressures result in a 327 Fed Mag delivering 1,300-1,600 fps (feet per second) and 430-640 ft-lb (foot-pounds) of muzzle energy, depending on the type and grain weight of the bullet.
