Is this only night vision or can it be be used at all in day time with some kind of cover etc? Expert Answer

Yes it can be used in day light as well without damaging the unit as it is a digital night vision and not tube powered.

Are the batteries only to operate the ir light? Will it work without batteries? I plan on getting a separate external ir light Expert Answer

All night vision requires some sort of battery to power the unit. There are no night vision units that do not use batteries in some way.
