Is it possible to replace the retention flap? I shaved it down as recommended but am not satisfied with the retention.

There is a chance that you may be able to get one from Vertx customer service directly but that individual piece is not something that is regularly stocked at the warehouse so it would only be available if another customer has returned one.

Will this attach to standard velcro or does it only work with Vertx bag panels?

Yes, this will work on all loop surfaces but performs best with true Velcro branded loop surfaces.

Will this one or the full size accommodate firearm with an MRD?

Yes. This will somewhat depend on your firearm and your optic placement, but in most cases the holster will accommodate this. If you need additional space or clearance, the material is designed so it can be trimmed for clearance.
