Review for
Armasight MNVD-51, 1x19 mm Bravo Gen 3 IIT, Multi-Purpose Night Vision Monocular, 51 Degree FOV
First. Its a good unit. I was nervous. But its a great deal. I was initially going to give this unit to my son, but I like it enough that I bridged it with my PVS-14 to make a binocular rig instead.
I have a Photonis Gen 2 GT-14, and a gen 3 L3 unfilmed aviation grade PVS-14, in addition to this Bravo MNVD-51. So a low end and a high end in addition to this one. This Bravo unit outperforms standard gen 2 in light gathering, resolution was good. Both of my existing units are 64 res and 72 res. This bravo unit was equal in clarity at 64 res. In terms of performance, the light gathering capability was on par with my higher end unit, and stomped the Gen 2 under extremely difficult conditions (rural deep woods under heavy canopy on a night with no moon and heavy cloud cover and light rain). Under extremely difficult conditions the lower FOM on this unit -- being a Bravo unit the SNR was lower than pinnacle units -- I had to manually adjust the gain down to darken the image (still usable though!!) in order to reduce the distracting noise (particles swimming in your view effect). The Gen 2 suffered similar SNR under extremely dark circumstances, but the bravo unit has manual gain so I could adjust it to reduce the nosie. Big benefit. With the gain cranked, there was a good amount of noise under extremely dark conditions. With gain adjusted down, the noise cleared up as the image darkened somewhat. I was still able to see out a couple hundred yards whereas with out NVG it was dead

GT-14 Gen 2+ on rural off grid homestead
Written on Jun 21, 2020
Okay, first off, to everyone reading this, this is a Photonis WHITE PHOSPHOR tube!! It doesn’t say it anywhere in the ad for some weird reason. But yes, this is WP tube, not tradition green phosphor screen. Each tube will that bviously be different, but here’s what I received: Photonis Gen 2+ White Phosphor tube with 60 resolution, 1:16 SNR, 960 FOM, 0.2 EBI and system gain 4402. This thing is AMAZINGLY clear. I used Gen 3 night vision as a cop in the 2000’s, and the resolution on this Gen 2+ is clearer than the Gen 3 I used then. The white phosphor is absolutely gorgeous to look at, and things “make more sense” to my eyes and ability to process image through the WP than through green screen. I live extremely remote rural, with virtually no light pollution and distance to neighbors is measured in miles down dirt roads. The biggest town in my whole county is barely a population 2,500 and it’s far away. My property is covered with 50’-80’ tall trees and dense forest canopy. When the unit arrived, it was almost a new moon (only 4%), below the horizon, when I first tested it. So quite literally the hardest conditions on a night vision tube except for trying to see in a cave or underground bunker. Even in these extremely dark circumstances, I COULD navigate and walk around my property. The tube was definitely on the dark side under these extremely taxing conditions, but I’ve seen L3 filmless Gen 3 AG scopes in the same circumstances not doing a whole lot better. I was impressed. W

Placed on aftermarket Benelli Nova Tactical +2 tube extender

Review for
NcSTAR 1" Shotgun Magazine Tube Mount
So, I have no complaints about the item itself. It’s very strong and makes for a very adaptable forward mount. However, either it, or my aftermarket mag tube extender were not exactly to spec. It was SO CLOSE to sliding on, but just couldn’t quite do it. I eventually resorted to a rubber mallet to overcome the last bit of resistance. That got it on. And it’s not coming off. And it’s not rotating. Super solid. Which is great, because beating on with a mallet opened the gap just a little too much, so I can’t use the hardware screws to secure it because the holes on each side no longer line up. Lol. I’m not worried though. I seriously would have to take a hammer to it to get to budge. It’s that tight. So I have a flashlight on my shotgun now which makes me happy.

Update review to Great Unit, Bad Battery
Written on Apr 23, 2020
I was contacted by Pulsar Europe and told to forward my contact information to their distributor in Texas to see about free battery testing and replacement. Pulsar considers the battery that comes with the unit to be under warranty for one year. I didn’t know that. When I did contact their people in Texas, their QA department just jumped straight to sending me a replacement immediately. It hasn’t arrived yet, as the exchange of info just happened, but they totally deserve props for outstanding customer service and I didn’t want my review to stand unamended. Unfortunately I can’t edit my original review, but I can’t post a new one to reassure folks this company really stands behind their products. Two enthusiastic thumbs up.

Fantastic mini thermal for CQB and perimeter defense, close to medium range hunting
Written on Apr 22, 2020
I purchased this unit under the old name, Torrey Pines T20. Torrey Pines Logic parent company launched Sector Optics, and rebranded the T20 under Sector Optics and discontinued the Torrey Pines T20, but its the same device. I purchased this mostly to supplement a ranch defense plan, with a bonus of easily sniping coyotes that went after my chickens after dark. I mounted it in a side by side configuration with my red dot on my AR15, using a 45 degree offset rail and a high profile scope ring mount. This thing works amazing. The rating says its detection range is up to 150 meters. I’ve actually tested the unit to 300 meters and can verify it reliably detects that far on the 5x zoom, although actually pulling the trigger on something at that distance is a different matter. The human sized heat signature at 300 yards on 5x zoom is the same size as the reticle. But, I’ve tested it against hidden people, against camouflage, in dark tree lines at 120 meters out, and Ive even tested it against ghillie suits with multiple different thermal absorption materials to aid masking heat signatures. This thing detects them all, when the naked eye (during the day) or night vision (at night) can’t see them at all. This is a great unit that really shines as a side by side optic on a rifle, principally for engagement at 75 yards and closer (but 125 yards is absolutely doable!). My set up uses this on a quick detach so I can scan using it like a monocular and if I spot something of interest, snap

Or if I’m running my scoped 308 DMR, snap it on that rail, put the heat signature in the reticle on the T20 then look through my high powered scope (because it will automatically have the crosshairs on the item of interest in this configuration) for a better look at what its picking up. The T20 often picks up things I could not see with the naked eye, even using a scope to augment my sight. Anyway, I’ve done a ton of videos on this unit and uploaded them to a common vide

Amazing device. Bad battery.
Written on Apr 19, 2020
First, I gotta say, this unit is absolutely astounding, and brilliant in clarity identification and detection. It was way better than I hoped, and I can’t put enough praise on it. I live off the grid in remote wilderness of rural North Idaho. I’ve used gen 3 night vision as a police officer, and I own night vision equipment. Which is why I decided to add in thermal. Now, my NVG is just a dust collector. If I have a reason to pull out optics at night, it’s thermals that come out. Screw the NVGs. I can count the hairs on a coyote in thick underbrush at twenty yards, or I can see a person in a ghillie suit hidden in a tree line at 100 yards like they are in a neon suit. This thing is amazing. I used the internal video camera to record a field mouse in a pasture at 80 yards in total darkness. It was so bright, I was shocked I was literally watching a mouse from 80 yards away in total darkness in dense grasses. So yeah, if I’m trying to see what’s out there, I only go for the thermal now. I highly recommend this unit. Now, the downside, and I can’t say if it’s normal or not (I doubt it is) but the unit I got from OpticsPlanet has a battery that won’t hold a charge for long. From day 1, even fully charged, it loses its charge quickly. I’m guessing it’s an internal short or something causing self discharge. I think I just got a bad battery, because I did NOT see this complaint from other owners when researching the unit prior to purchase. I wish I could just get a functioning batte
