Internal Battery Failure

Written on Jul 03, 2022

I have owned a dozen or so cellular trail cameras from various manufacturers. Overall, I like Spypoint the best. I thought this camera was the final solution. No batteries. Put it in the field in good sunlight, turn it on, and never have to go back. That was how it worked for 9 months. I had it in the field full time since I got it. Recently, pictures became intermittent. Then, they stopped all together. The battery showed to be dead. When I pulled it from the filed, it was completely dead. The on / off switch didn't do anything. When I plugged in the charger, it powered on, showed charging, but the battery % showed 100%. When I unplugged the charger, it was dead and wouldn't power on. I plugged it back in for a full day. Still dead.
So, I loved it while it was working. I'll be sending it back to Spypoint for warranty repair / replacement.

You bought a $4K+ scope. Don't be cheap now. Buy the Borbro mount

Written on Dec 27, 2020

I have had this mount for almost two years. I have been using it on a Pulsar Trail XQ38. I really didn't like the mount from the start but it was all that was available when I purchased it.

The Good: You can quickly detach and reattach your scope. This is a plus if you use your scope for scanning. I scan with it off the gun and then reattach it once I locate pigs. The mount holds "minute of pig" accuracy out to 50 yards.

The Bad: The mount has a single mounting point. On the QD leaver side, there is only about 3/4" of mount that tightens against the rail. It is basically the equivalent of buying a $5K scope and then mounting it with just one scope ring. Elevation has been fine but windage shift is as much as 8" at 100 yards. This is alter zeroing, removing and putting right back on (same day, same weather conditions, same distance, etc.). Once its clamped on, it holds zero fine but 3 shot groups shot consecutively after detaching and reattaching confirm that it windage shifts all over the place. Switching between guns requires readjusting the QD tension if the rails aren't exactly the same width. Last, after many times on and off, the clamp bar on the QD side of mine is bowed so that it really only has firm contact directly under the QD leaver.

After completely missing several animals and confirming my zero shift suspicions, I am ditching this mount and have ordered the Borbro. It is twice as much money but appears to fix all of the above shortcomings.

Great replacement option for Mil Spec A2 stock

Written on Dec 25, 2020

I purchased this to replace a solid A2 Stock on my AR. This is the stock only. It does not include the buffer tube. You will reuse the A2 buffer tube. Instillation was a simple three screw process. Fit was perfect. I didn't weigh each stock but this one felt a little lighter than the A2 stock it replaced. It isn't pounds lighter but every little bit helps. I think it looks great. I would definitely buy this again.

Optics Planet is the best!!!

Very light weight. Great quality. Good price.

Written on Dec 25, 2020

I purchased this to replace a thick, solid, heavy hand guard and barrel nut on a rock river predator rifle. The barrel nut can be tightened with a common crescent wrench, no special tools required. The nut is low profile and relatively light weight. You don't need to worry about alignment with the gas tube. The hand guard fits on the barrel nut with a friction fit. Two screws hold it on with a clamp style fit. I'm hunting coyotes, not fighting a war. Once everything is tightened up, the hand guard seems rigid and secure. You would have to abuse the heck out of it to bend or knock it off. I will definitely buy this hand guard again.
Oh, Optics Planet rocks!!!

If you buy a Pulsar thermal sight, order this also

Written on Apr 26, 2019

I have a Pulsar XP50 thermal scope. The scope has multiple profiles so that it can be used on several different guns. I don't have the money to buy a separate unit to scan with, so I use my scope for that also. I found that it was too hard to scan with it mounted on my rifle. With this mount, I can un-clip it to scan and spot game (pigs). Once they are located, I just clip it back on the rifle and let em' have it. It works great. I only need "minute of pig" accuracy, so I haven't noticed any return to zero problems. In addition to the above, I can switch the scope from my 300 blk, to my 22, to my 308 easily for multiple hunting situations. If you have a Pulsar thermal scope, you need this mount.

New Life for an Old Gun

Written on Apr 26, 2019

I bought this for an old Remington 1100 that hadn't been shot in about 25 years. This is easy to install. As long as your gun is clean and oiled, it will cycle like a new one with this. I wish I had bought it 24 years ago.

Best thermal for the money

Written on Jul 05, 2018

I was on the fence between the XQ or the XP model of this scope. At my work, we have the XP50 Helion monoculars. Their resolution is amazing. I was trying to stay within a budget but was worried that I would be disappointed with the lower resolution XQ model. I talked to a professional guide who does thermal pig hunts and sells thermal scopes for a living. He recommended the XQ, saying that money vs. quality, it was a no brainer. Unless you are rich and just want to one-up your buddy, there isn't enough noticeable difference between the XQ and XP to justify paying another 2K.
After getting the scope and using it, I completely agree. The resolution and sensitivity are great. I am 100% satisfied.

Amazing scope for the price

Written on Jul 05, 2018

I had a VIP discount coupon (Thank You Optics Planet) and used it to get a smoking deal on this scope. With a good IR illuminator, this thing is awesome. I have used 4th gen night vision costing thousands and this beats them hands down. For the price, you can't go wrong. Click the button.....Do it now......Your wife will never know.

The good:
Price
(with good IR) The sight picture is clear and crisp well beyond 200 yards
Wifi, Streamvision App, and Live streaming is too cool
Abundance of digital features, reticle options, zoom, etc.
Price

The bad:
The sight picture is narrow. The screen is square, not rectangle. May make keeping moving targets in the scope challenging.
The exit pupil is small (your eye has to be aligned perfectly to see the video screen)
The instructions for zeroing are backwards in the instruction manual - this turned "one shot" zeroing in to 20 rounds of shoot - swear - shoot - swear - ....you get the picture. My advice - put the auxiliary cross hair on your aim point and move the aiming crosshairs to the point of impact and you will be dead on.

Who sells just one mount?

Written on Jul 05, 2018

I ordered this mount at the same time I ordered a Sightmark Photon RT. It came up as a recommended item with the scope. I figured since it was marked by Sightmark and recommended by Optics Planet with the scope, it must be exactly what I was looking for to mount the scope. It wasn't till it came it that I realized that this is ONE ring. Who the heck needs just one ring? If it were a set, this would be a good deal. However, considering that you have to multiply the price X 2, there are better options out there.
Quality wise, I put it on par with the replacement set I ordered that were less than $20 total.

Last note, even if this were a set, it is too low to get a comfortable sight picture with the sightmark scope mounted on an AR.
