Received improved version (SEP 2025)

Written on Sep 21, 2025

The picture shows an original Mk16 rail. The product I received in September 2025 was the current production (improved) version, which includes steel QD inserts and is made from a more rigid 7000-series aluminum. Happy customer.

Size and Weight

Written on Jul 11, 2025

I don’t know why Guard Dog can’t be bothered to publish the specs on their own product, but here are the measurements from the size medium vest I took a chance on:

Overall weight: 3lbs 4oz
Ballistic Insert Material: Soft UHMWPE, modified swimmers cut.
Front Ballistic Insert: 12.75”x11.5”x0.56”, 19 oz
Rear Ballistic Insert: 15.75”x11.5”x0.56”, 23.5 oz
Carrier Material: 100% Polyester
Carrier Weight: 9.5 oz

Fit: I am 5’9, 180 lbs, 39” chest. Wear a size large shirt. Size medium carrier fits perfectly.

Pros: Great price, very comfortable.

Cons: Need a buddy to zip it up, otherwise it’s an awkward pull-over. Not actually “concealable”.

Bottom Line: I’m very happy with my purchase, this is a huge upgrade over my issued vest, for not a lot of money.

That said, I am a uniformed officer - so I don’t really care about concealment. I only care about value and comfort, I’m not actually trying to hide the fact that I have a vest on.

If you want a cheap comfortable vest for work, I recommend this. If you want to wear a vest without other people knowing, you might need to spend a little more money (consider the Premier Body Armor Everyday Armor Shirt).

Rock Solid - Slow to Adjust

Written on Jul 16, 2024

I’m really impressed with the build quality on this. It’s overbuilt and on the heavy side, but rock solid. Having LOP and comb height adjustability in a side folder is great. Often with side folders, the dimensions are fixed and you just have to make them work. In this case you can really get it dialed in for your body type. Please note, the adjustments are a little slow and cumbersome compared to some other designs. You aren’t going to be making adjustments on the move, you need to stop and focus for 30 seconds or so. Not a big deal, but something to be aware of. Finally a like that the stock does not lock in the folded position, but is held in place by spring pressure. It’s fast to deploy and slow to stow, just as it should be. Overall, 4 stars. If you want a lightweight folder, look elsewhere. If you want an overbuilt folder that looks cool and can be adjusted to your frame, this is a great buy.

Room for Improvement

Written on Jul 15, 2024

Not bad. The price is reasonable enough, and it fundamentally works. Two complaints though: First, this brace adaptor is specifically intended for use the Gearhead Works Tailhook Series, which come from the factory drilled for an anti-rotation pin. It would have been be so easy to put a matching cutout in this adapter, and get full functionality of both products. Skipping this obvious feature was lazy. Second: The adapter has a little play to it. Nothing crazy, but I think they should have aired on the side of being too tight rather than too loose. It could have been rock solid, but instead it’s got a tiny rattle.

Does It’s Job

Written on Jul 15, 2024

This is a very simple product, but it does its job well. It is extremely tight on my AP5 receiver, such that I need a soft mallet to install and remove it. I used a dab of grease to try and protect the metal finish, but it still scuffed things up pretty good. I’m fine with that though, a tight fit is a solid fit. Dropped one star for price, $100 seems like a lot for what is a technically simple part.

Good Value

It’s well made, and compares favorably to competitors at a higher price point. I wish it had a slightly stronger spring, but I have that same complaint about most 3-Lug mounts. This one isn’t uniquely weak. The 3-Lug mounting interface is an imperfect system, and sometimes you need to do a little trial and error to find the right combination of adaptors and mounts. With that reality in mind, the cost of this unit makes it a good starting point.
