Not as good as mirror -- unless you want to play army guy
Let's get the important thing out of the way right now: I've had one of these for over 20 years and yes, it works just fine. Open it up and the needle will find mag north. But so will any $0.25 button compass. One thing I've learned over time is that a compass needs to give you reliable information ...

Solid piece pf equipment
I bought this for my Father for backpacking. The one he had was an old plastic thing that was finicky. I figured it would be a cool thing for him to take on trips or just show his friends. I was issued one of these exact units in the Marine Corps and it held up well. Over all, build quality is awesome, tritium is bright and it’s a solid piece of kit.
Pros:
- Accurate
- heavy duty construction
- illuminated
Cons:
- None
Would recommend: Yes
Very pleased
Part of any good outdoor kit - hiking, hunting, whatever - is a good compass. And this is certainly a good compass. Construction quality is solid, the tritium components are very bright, the numbers are easy to read even in darkness. There's a reason these have been so widely adopted. Absolutely worth it.
Pros:
- durable
- Accurate
- High-quality
Cons:
- None
Best Used for:
- hunting
- shooting
- hiking
- camping

Maybe the next one will be better?
Starting this review I would like to commend the staff at Optics Planet, they have been friendly and a pleasure to work with while helping me exchange this compass. On the other hand, it should be noted that Cammenga didn't respond to 2 emails or 3 phone calls and I gave them over a week to reply.
The compass arrived in a week after ordering it on 1/1/24. Packing was appropriate and all documentation was in order. The case that comes with the compass is suitable and functional with a drain hole that allows moisture to drip out in inclement weather. First glance at the compass and you notice it has a nice finish and paint is uniform. Compass was manufactured December 2023 as indicated by the stamp inside the cover. Lanyard is long and wrapped around compass body and secured under the thumb loop. Thumb loop is riveted to the base however the rivet wasn't properly mushroomed over. This isn't a major flaw but it does show lack of attention to detail. Upon opening the cover and exposing its main features I couldn't help but notice the flaws with the rear sight that is held in place by the previously mentioned rivet. The lens has a scuff on it and the circular hole that holds the lens it place has a very noticeable burr on it. This lens is used to read the floating dial to take an azimuth reading when using the compass-to-cheek technique. Rear sight also has marks on it indicating someone tried but was unsuccessful at removing the piece of casting that forms the burr. O...

Great compass at great price
Haven't used it in the field yet, but it's heavyweight (substantial), seems well-made, has all the functions I was looking for. And at a price lower than Amazon! I've learned to check Optics Planet before ordering somewhere else.
Pros:
- Features, value
Cons:
- None
Best Used for:
- Anytime you need to know direction: Hunting, hiking, driving.

Number one COMPASS
You get what you pay for, this is the best I will buy more for the family. Take the time and learn how to use
and never get lost or turned around when you are out of doors. If it isn't in my pocket I stay home. Most important
equipment I have.

Know where you are going
Great compass, I have two of these and will be purchasing another soon. I am sure there are better ones out there but I know there are a whole lot of worse ones. With that said it is a heavy compass mine came with a pouch and to everyone out there if you are looking at a Cammenga compass for the Northern Hemisphere it must say on the compass "3M". I use a compass all of the time and these have never failed me.

Great Experience
The compass was shipped quickly, was as advertised, and I am very happy with it. I like the fact that it is made in the USA, and it is exactly the same as the one I used while in the armed forces. I would recommend this to anyone.
Pros:
- Very accurate
Cons:
- Heavy
Best Used for:
- Camping, Land Navigation, hiking
Would recommend: Yes
Swell Army Compass
Quality. I dropped it from about four feet onto a wood floor and it still works. Contact Cammenga to see which one comes with the webgear pouch; it's good to have. No promises, but the "box" package option got me a pouch.

Good compass
Try to buy tritium viles Which you can't use alone you need holders which seem to cost a small fortune. No need to mock folks because you think you can follow an azimuth exactly on foot as though you are in an airplane unless you are in the salt plains maybe. Somehow I wonder if some person's can read a compass but don't really know how to use them. This not a perfect instrument. But it is a good one.And for people who wish to be descret in low light or in the darkness it is very helpful. I ounce was told that if you set out by compass and you ended within 5 degrees of where you wanted to go you were doing exealent
Best Used for:
- hiking
