Most Helpful Positive Review The Malcolm Scope Review Part 2
I wish to add a part two review of the Malcolm Scope that is now mounted on my Uberti Sharps 45/70. I got my scope mounted by a well known local gunsmith here where I live who is familiar with the mounting process of Malcolms. After four long months due to his backlog I received my rifle back and I ...

It's COOL!

by Buff, from MT, United States Written on July 17, 2019
I bought this scope in lieu of putting a tang sight on a replica Winchester HiWall. It's an eye catcher. Everyone who sees it thinks it's great and wants one. It's moved this rifle back to the top of the heap as far as a fun gun to carry and shoot. It takes a little longer to sight it in than a modern scope but it is a marvel to play with. I'm planning a bison hunt for this winter and this rascal is going to be blooded then. I can now enjoy this rifle because I can actually see with this scope to shoot accurately where my aging eyes could no longer find a front sight. I had tentatively planned to install a tang sight but with a bit of research found that I could install this scope for the same money as a moderately priced tang sight. You'll have to have the barrel on a high wall drilled and tapped by a gunsmith to use the high recoil rear mount but it is so worth it.
It's way COOL! Do yourself a favor and get one if you like black powder cartridge rifles.
Pros:
  • So much fun and functional
Cons:
  • waiting for the barrel to be drilled and tapped
Best Used for:
  • so far it's been shooting gophers in the yard

Very fine period scope.

by Robert Worthington, Verified Owner from WA, United States Written on June 3, 2018
A beautiful scope, it suits my half-stock muzzle loader very well, and makes her a tack driver, too. The optics are clear and bright. The mount could be better, as only two screws hold the rear mount to the block held by a dovetail and three screws. I'm not sure I understand the logic behind that, but it works just fine on my .36 cal. peashooter, which is pretty easy on the recoil. It holds well, and the first 50 yard group I shot was four shots in 1-3/4", which I expect to improve as The barrel seasons and I work on the load a bit.
Now, I want to get more mounts, so I can use the scope on my .50 cal. percussion longrifle, .577 Snider-Enfield, and my Martini-Greener .45-70.
I added the fine elevation adjustment, which I think is a good way to go.
Installation wasn't difficult; had to cut a rear dovetail and drill and tap for the rear mount screws, but I'm a gunsmith, so not a big deal for me.
Ideal for old-time guns that wouldn't look right with a modern style scope.
P.S. I have the shorter version on my .44-40 mini-Sharps, way fun!
Pros:
  • good optics
  • Looks right for the gun
  • reasonably easy installation
Cons:
  • Narrow field of view
Best Used for:
  • period piece historical arms

Hi-Lux 32" classic 6X scope

by Hi-Lux scope, from OH, United States Written on April 26, 2018
A beautiful, classic looking scope. I am currently having this scope professionally installed on my Sharp's 45-70. To mount this scope on my rifle, the barrel must be cut. I highly recommend having this done by a professional gunsmith. I had to send my rifle to Montana! As for the scope, the quality seems very good and the glass is a fixed 6 power that is clear and bright. For the price you can't go wrong. It's very inexpensive vs. trying to find a period correct scope. I will add to my review after sending 50 to 100 rounds down range!!

Malcolm Telescopic 6X Review in 2018

by T Man, Verified Owner from OK, United States Written on April 25, 2018
Great looking scope but wish the finish was better quality. The bluing is very thin so will not hold up to scrapes. My scope even had a small rust spot on it because the finish did not protect that area. Perhaps this finish makes the scope look more like a "period" telescopic sight. So be sure to give it a silicone rag rubbing or even better apply several coats of Renaissance Wax. This wax is used by museums to protect metal and wood relics. I use it on all of my firearms.

BTW the Tube Locking Collar (TLC) is included with the scope. A reviewer in 2008 said the TLC was not included with his scope. So perhaps Malcolm was motivated to include the TLC after reading his review.

I recommend adding the Leatherwood Hi-Lux William Malcolm Fine Elevation Adjustment. This makes elevation adjusting so much easier and also enhances the scope's appearance.
Pros:
  • "1873 Period" apperance and 6X magnification
Cons:
  • Bluing finish is too thin.
Best Used for:
  • Have mine mounted on a Pedersoli 1864 Sharps (model Billy Dixon) Rifle, 45-70 Government

Worth What I Paid

by CJ, from MN, United States Written on October 30, 2016
Looks nice on my H&R. Acquired it for well under $400 on sale. Mounts easily, but the included instructions could use more illustrations. With all the screw-related adjustments required for positioning and zeroing, an additional set of screws would have been nice. At present, I can recommend this scope for its authentic styling and clear optics. Time will tell regarding its robustness.

Malcolm 6X Long Scope 32"

by BangPuffThud, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on April 20, 2016
The scope has excellent optics and looks great. As mentioned in other reviews, the mounts are not the best but now Leatherwood includes the Heavy Duty Recoil rear base and Tube Locking Collar. You will need to purchase the Fine Elevation Adjustment unless you plan to sight it in, lock it down and leave it as is. I purchased 2 of these scopes, 1 for a Uberti 1874 Sharps Deluxe and 1 for a Lyman Great Plains Hunter ML. I purchased the Pedersoli Malcolm Rear Mount for the Sharps and the Fine Elevation Adjustment accessory for the Lyman. Both scopes were packaged perfectly and arrived unscathed; however, one of the scopes crosshairs were broken. Returned to Optics Planet and they shipped a replacement scope within 48 hours. OPTICSPLANET ROCKS....AND THEY HAVE GREAT PRICES.
Pros:
  • excellent optics
Cons:
  • Could use better mounts
Best Used for:
  • muzzleloaders
  • BPCR

Malcolm 32" 6x scope on Sharps

by Paul, Verified Owner from WI, United States Written on April 3, 2016
Put this on a Pedersoli 45-70 Sharps (30 inch barrel). The optics are very nice. The mounts are rudimentary, period specific. The real problem is the elevation adjustment. The recoil is just too much for it to hold zero no matter how tight you tighten the thumbscrew. I am presently waiting for the fine elevation adjustment piece ($65 I think). I hope this will prevent this movement (on back order everywhere). The gun and scope combination attract quite the comments on the range. It is quite authentic looking.
