This is the third time I've purchased this forend. The only one I like better for the 870 or 590 is the Strike Industries VOA (for about 5x the price).

As the brief title states, this is a great piece to start with/build upon. Typical Mods I complete on the MOE M-LOK Forend:

1) Light Mounting - I prefer to run a light in the 6 o'clock position (for the last two build it has been a Modlite PDW series lightbody with a Unity Tactical Gas Cap mounted to a Magpul MAG588 aluminum cantilevered pic rail)...this location and mounting preference require that I file-down the forward hand stop. My personal preference is the file down the entire handstop to a height that permits the cantilever pic rail to mount flat to the forward-most 6 o'clock M-LOK slot. Then, I file an additional angle on each side to blend it with the shape of the forend. Lastly, I add a Unity Tactical Axon SL single lead USB-C remote switch & M-LOK mount to the 9:30ish o-clock M-LOK slots in the position that works for me ergonomically. VIOLA, just made a Magpul-Modlite based version of the Surefire LMG/DSF set-up (but it functions and looks better IMHO).

2) It is slippery - I've addressed the need for additional grip/traction of this forend two ways. First was to use a Harbor Freight center punch to stipple the surface (could also use a Dremel with a carbide burr and a light touch). So I ordered a Flat Dark Earth version of this handguard and while I do understand that the Magpul FDE may not be a direct match to the FDE of mu Ruger 556, what I received is in no way even close. This is a Magpul issue not a Optics Planet issue. It came in a box labeled FDE but is actually ODG. Will need to return it so that I can get the correct one.

I used this to upgrade my Mossberg Maverick 88 shotgun. I did have to buy a 7 3/4" slide action tube from a Mossberg 500 off of ebay to mount it to. It looks great and I really like the way it feels over the forend that it came with.

The Magpul 590 furniture is of great quality. It took a noticeable amount of weight off of my shotgun. I like the added ergonomics and the comfort of the rubber butt pad. Easy to install.

Does not fit mlok light attachments such as the streamlights. You will need to install a pic rail and mount the light to that instead of using a direct mlok mount. There is too much material around the the fore end to mount it
