Lazarus's Review of Magpul Industries UBR Gen2 Collapsible AR15/AR10 Carbine Stock

Overall, for my needs on my general purpose AR, this is an excellent stock.

First, the weight: It's NOT heavy. People IMAGINE it is when they read it weighs 24 oz while not taking into account that this weight includes the receiver extension, and then compare it directly to a B5 Bravo or Sopmod, without considering the buffer tube. It's not more than 4 oz heavier than an A2 stock and rifle length extension, or the Magpul rifle stock and extension, if you consider the buffer tube/receiver extension being built in to the UBRg2. It's not significantly heavier overall than a SOPMOD stock on an A5 extension. If you compare weight honestly to other complete systems and not just the UBR system next to a bare stock, you'll find a difference of mere ounces. In the world of barrel-heavy AR carbines, a few ounces in the trunk only helps the weapon. It's the hidden reason why so many prefer fixed stocks in the first place, and that's that they're solid and they feel more balanced on the weapon.

Solid and balanced, with adjustability, that's what the UBR gen 2 brings to the table. I run mine behind a medium contour barrel and one of the lightest handguards on the market, and my gun balances perfectly on the center of the magwell, where I like it. It's over 9 lbs fully loaded, but it doesn't feel it at all. All the weight is at the back between my arms, right in the cradle. With my hybrid comp doing it's job, and my recoil system tuned, an exaggerated/extended C-Clamp grip isn't required to control the weapon, it controls itself. Consider the balance of your weapon to be a priority over it being low weight.

I docked it a star as there is a feature/design choice I don't fully understand, at least, not for some folks. If you're the type of shooter that brings their head to the gun, naturally shrugging your shoulders up while craning your neck down and forward to achieve your consistent weld and sight picture, you will love this stock. If, however, you're a bring the gun to your head type shooter, as I am, you might not fully appreciate this stock in all applications, especially if you're large framed.

The issue is with the polymer cheek piece that covers the receiver extension being fixed in place against the lower rather than being allowed to slide with the adjustable portion of the stock. This results in the gap at the top-rear of the stock. For me, running an optic with a 3" give or take eye box and shouldering my rifle closer to the center of my chest, running this stock fully closed to three clicks open to get my eye in the box and my cheek in position, it works. If you're a person with an upright shooting stance who brings the gun to their head and ALSO requires an A1+ length of pull, you might find yourself dropping your cheek into that gap. If you crane your head and shrug up, you'll be fine.

All magpul needs to do is make the top cover move with the adjustable portion. I'm going to modify mine to do so. I can also see an aftermarket like of wider and even storage capable replacements for this piece, make the UBR like a fixed yet adjustable sopmod style stock. I'd buy all of it.

I hesitated for a long while on this stock, even to the point of trying it used first in case I really didn't like it. As a guy with only a handful of lowers, this stock has taken the place of an A1ish/fixed carbine style stock on my GPR lower. I have an SPR/DMR lower, a carbine/SBR/Pistol lower, and a Mini buffer/Pistol lower. I would use it anywhere I needed a fixed stock, over any other fixed stock other than those chosen for aesthetics/tradition. It really is that solid... they just need to make he cheek piece slide with the rest of the stock and it would be perfect. Would be awesome in a short and stout SMG/PDW/SBR role, and slick on a law folder as well.
Pros:
  • great for the right gun in the right hands for the right application
Cons:
  • potentially problematic for larger framed upright shooters
Best Used for:
  • anywhere you'd use a fixed stock
Would Recommend: Yes
