Most Helpful Positive Review Great Electronic Hearing Protection in a Compact Design
The Peltor Tactical 6S Hearing Protector (97044) interested me because of its features: electronic hearing protection in a compact design. Compactness is why I chose the 6S over the 7S. During initial use I was pleased to discover that the earmuffs are not bulky at all and were lighter than I tho...

Most Helpful Negative Review Peltor electronic hearing protectors
After a loud impulse noise, like a gunshot, Peltor's electronics supress amplification for more than a second! This makes hearing range commands or other normal-level sounds difficult, expecially in noisy environments, like indoor firearm ranges. Most other manufacturer's hearing protectors regain...

Great Product

by Robert H, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on September 19, 2021
I bought these I'd say 5-7 years ago, these are great the around the neck band allows these to be worn with any and all style tactical protective head gear. I switched the protectors so my Mick's face rear for obvious reasons.... these things have been thru a beating with me still work great and still 100% functional.... only bad thing I can say is battery changes.... I've cracked the tension piece twice now changing batteries..... fix that little flaw and these things are perfect.... buy them without fear they are great.......
Pros:
  • durable
  • light weight
  • long lasting
  • Works with most if not all head gear
Cons:
  • Changing batteries
Best Used for:
  • Any noise suppression needs

Caught fire

by Brian Baltzell, Verified Owner from WA, United States Written on September 25, 2020
I received these 3M Peltor 6S ear muffs in the mail yesterday. I bought 4 new name brand AAA batteries and installed them to test. Immediately after putting them on and turning on the power I realized the left speaker was rattling and buzzing. I use to do car stereo installs and it sounds like the speaker is blown. After a few minutes of testing and realising how bad they sound I noticed the right side getting very hot. I took them off my head and opened that side to find the battery melting and smoking. Yes I put the batteries in the right way. I have had these for less than 24 hours and they are completely useless.
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • DANGEROUS
Best Used for:
  • trash

1 minor flaw - changing batteries

by Robert, from KS, United States Written on August 29, 2017
I've had mine for almost a year. I've used them for Pistol, rifle & shotgun.
1st the Pro's -> 1. These do not "amplify" the sound like others will, just enough for normal conversation, therefore you don't get that constant pinging echo you get with the others at indoor ranges, or at a Booth Type pistol/rifle range. I've had it do that once and just turned it down some. Others I've had to turn off & I added inner ear protection.
2. Behind the head/neck band works great. I really prefer this type now that I've used it.
3. individual volume control - best part of this is-IF they get turned on in the bag, 50/50 you'll still have one ear with a mic.

Now the CON -> 1. minor, but some like the "Amplified" earmuffs for hunting due to the increased volume to hear little critters far away - These will not do that (at least mine won't)
2. It seems to me the "Slim side" of the muff, should be the down side for rifle or shotgun - they bother me when they hit the stock, so I flip them upside down -band behind my head, not the neck. U-Tube Video tells how to fix that - same video on how to change the batteries !
3. What a Pain in the fingers to change batteries ! You feel like your trying to Break Them apart! No directions came with mine - luckily a fellow range worker had a pair just like these. Easy way -Per a You Tube Video - Use a Screwdriver to Pry them apart ! & to pop the batteries out.
4. - These take up a lot of room in the range bag - they do not snap together...

Pros:
  • Not Over Amplified
  • individual volume control
  • comfortable with head gear
Cons:
  • Changing Batteries is a Pain !
  • Slim side of Muffs should be the Down side, but you can flip them over
  • Take up a lot of room in the Range bag
Best Used for:
  • Pistol Range

No regrets with 3M Peltor products

by StreetDoc, Verified Owner from AR, United States Written on July 16, 2017
Just received my new set of 3M Peltor Tactical 6S behind the head electronic ear pro yesterday. Like everything 'Peltor' I've ever owned, these are SUPER comfortable, and seal around my ears really well. Even with eye pro on and while doubling up with ear plugs in as well. The technology is tried & true but is also a little dated. The impulse sound (i.e. report of a gunshot etc) attenuation is only rated at 19 which is only moderate, hence my doubling up by also wearing ear plugs. I've spent a career in vehicles with a siren & air horn right above my head, so I try to manage and maintain what hearing I have left by always doubling. And while the mics pic up conversational voices & commands/instruction on the firing line, when a sound is attenuated the unit blanks for a split second. Like we were all likely used to in the 80s and early 90s. Long story short... they are rugged like every other Peltor ear pro, as evidenced by their use in our military. But the electronics really ought to be updated.

My main reason for getting these was that it's a behind-the-head set. Others reading this who are sporting large heads will understand this. Over-the-head models like the Howard Leight can sometimes not 'quite' obtain a decent seal on my ears, so this I was excited to try. I've quickly fallen for the 6S but miss being able to fold up my ear pro and take up less space.

Not folding up & the tech being a little dated is why I only rated these at four stars. But if 4.5 were an option t...

Good Product

by Bucky, Verified Owner from MA, United States Written on June 30, 2017
Overall a good product, would recommend to anyone wanting slim design ear protection. Does not interfere with cheek weld in prone position. Like the behind the head feature for wearing of hats. Gave four stars due to the difficulty for battery install.

Great product

Great product for the price, allows you to wear hearing protection while wearing a ballistic helmet. Great low profile design, does not interfere when shooting a rifle. Small compact design makes it easy to store in range bags.

Good Value for the Money but missed the mark for Greatness

by kent, from TX, United States Written on June 17, 2016
The behind the head headband is great. It maintains a good fit and is out of the way of wearing glasses, hats and slings. My ears are sensitive to loudness after years of abuse and these muffs suppress the sound to a comfortable level. The amplifier/speaker system is a feature I'll always insist upon having from now on. Being able to hear my fellow hunters or range officer is a tremendous advantage and convenience over someone who has to remove plugs or muffs to communicate.

As mentioned by others, the installation and removal of the batteries is accomplished via a disappointing method. The cushion rings of both ear cups have to be "popped out and popped back in" to replace the batteries. It's not the hardest thing in the world but it's not a breeze either. I haven't had a failure yet but I anticipate that the cushion ring will wear out or I'll end up tearing it. Should that happen, I might "pop" for a high end set of muffs that have better electronics for hearing and locating sounds in the field, the ability to connect radio or phone communications and of course a better thought out battery system.
Until that day, these will handle the job comfortably.

Excellent piece of kit

by Mark Rickelman, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on June 11, 2016
I have used these for a few weeks now. Ran them on a couple tactical carbine courses and while doing a little hog hunting. They worked great. Did a fantastic job of blocking the pew and still allowed me to hear normal conversation. Even picked up the brush rustling from animal movement I wouldn't normally have heard.
Pros:
  • Sound protection, comfort and ability to use the electronic component effectively
Cons:
  • Difficult to change batteries
Best Used for:
  • hunting
  • shooting/range day
  • Tactical/Home Defense
