50-50 SHOT. WHICH WILL IT BE?
I have two of these units. One has been trouble free. The other has a huge jump in brightness between settings 3 and 4. Being the most used settings it really made this unit a no go. Return for service made no difference. I used to recommend this unit. Not any more!
prinary arms microdot

Windage stopped working after 6 years
Minimal use on a 7.62x39. Saw maybe 250 rounds over 6 year period. Won’t adjust left. Will be trying out the warranty process. Hoping I get a replacement that will last longer..
Pros:
- Looks good
Cons:
- Could not adjust windage left after a few years
Best Used for:
- Smaller caliber maybe
Would recommend: No
Misaligned lens
I ordered two of these Primary Arms red dot sights. I tried to zero the sight on an AK pistol. The red dot would shift after each shot. Impossible to zero the sight. I checked the sight afterwards and noticed the front lens was crooked in the body. I checked the other sight and it was the same. I am returning both of them. Optics Planet customer service was very helpful and I received the RMA immediately. I would not recommend this sight. I know the phrase “cheap Chinese junk” is a cliche but it is appropriate in this context.
Pros:
- None
Cons:
- Misaligned front lens
Would recommend: No
Not bright enough
Ok for low light conditions. Not for bright daylight shooting.
Pros:
- Low cost
Cons:
- not bright
Best Used for:
- Low light cond.
Would recommend: No
Primary arms, red dot
It just seems to me like these were rejected red dots from Primaryarms and bought at discounted prices by other companies.. I bought two of these and the brightness knobs are so hard to turn. My wife cannot even turn them, and I can barely turn them myself. I actually have to put the knob in the arch between my thumb and first finger two turned it off.. I doubt they’re going to loosen up either, obviously a manufacturing flaw.
Pros:
- that works
Cons:
- Marvel, superhero strength to turn the knob
Would recommend: No
Came with dead battery. Sporadic issues after installing a new one.
As the title states, I bought this with the impression that it should work out of the box. It took me a good 10 minutes to figure out how to turn it on, but it turns out the battery was just dead the whole time. I put a new C2035 battery in it and turned it on. The red dot popped up, but if you shake it or barely touch the sight, the dot will disappear and reappear sporadically. I’m not sure if I got a defective unit, but I would not recommend this one.
Pros:
- Fast shipmemt
Cons:
- defective
Best Used for:
- return credit
Would recommend: No
Knob is loose after light usage.
Got this to pair with an attero arms rear sight mount for an AK that doesn't have a side optic mount. Was impressed with it at first considering the price. Seemed solid enough and the knob was very stiff and tactile at first, but after living on the rifle for a couple of months and seeing maybe 300 rounds the brightness knob came loose. Never dropped or abused it in any way that would cause it to break. It still works but I'm sure with another few hundred rounds (if that even) it'll loosen up even more and become totally worthless. I'm hoping primary arms has some sort of warranty so I'm not completely out of luck with it. Also, the dot isn't the most crisp, I've seen ebay optics with a better defined dot.
Pros:
- None
Cons:
- breaks easily
- dot a bit fuzzy
Would recommend: Yes
Knob broke
Less than 6 months and the knob that turns the unit on an off is loose and sometimes cuts off under recoil. Its the cheapest PA red dot so I guess you get what you pay for; I was hoping for more than 6 months.
Pros:
- None
Cons:
- not very rugged.
Best Used for:
- trash
Would recommend: No
Very nice, especially for price
I purchased this sight to help my old eyes with CQB. Iron sights night as well be invisible to my 60+ year old eyes. It compares well to my more expensive Sig and Vortex red dots. The dot has good visibility at all brightness settings, and there is very little bleed on the brightest setting, which is often a problem on other red dots I've used over the years.
Pros:
- Simple, clean design. Straightforward controls. Price is VERY good. The mount is rock solid, and it holds zero perfectly for the first 200 rounds on an AKM series rifle.
Cons:
- Absolutely none so far with 500 rounds through the rifle it's mounted on.
Would recommend: Yes
Purchased in 2017 - still running despite banging it into things and running around with it
Do your LARP on the range? Has early 2020 also inspired you to improve with your kit? Well, there's a really good chance you looked at this and missed out on the opportunity or are looking now to find an optic that won't leave you too broke to train effectively. If you have the cash for a more expensive optic that's better than this one AND ammo to train, buy it, but if you don't have money for ammo to train with after that optic I'm urging you to consider this option. Sub $100 optic that was a bit more money back then and has proven to perform on my rifle, sub $30 Primary Arms riser that was also a bit more money, and hundreds of rounds of ammo to train with? You had me at "range trip," baby.
Full disclosure, I purchased this optic, the Primary Arms lower 1/3 cowitness mount, their 6X magnifier, and the lower 1/3 q.d. flip mount over 5 years ago for a lot more money than they're selling for now. BUT, this optic and its mount have all been glued (thread locker is technically glue) to my 7.62 kalash variant since March 2017 while the magnifier has been close by or on the rifle for half of that time...and I'm thinking about getting another to go on my cp33 since the Bushnell T25 (that's been the town bike among my friends getting into modern rifles) refuses to hold zero now.
In the last 5 years, this optic has seen at least 1500 rounds per year, on average (more rounds in recent years), from sighting in to confirming zero to LARPing as S.F. at my closest dynamic training cent...
