Promag stock
Much better than I anticipated. Sturdy. Lightweight. folding stock locks up well with no play. Assembly took about 1 minute with no issues. Used original stock screws without a problem. Wish they made similar items for savage rifles
it fits my remington 597
It fit my Remington 597 just fine. Locking mechanism is a little tight. Punch it open if you have to? Takes 5 minutes to fold your .22lr.

Great stock!
There aren't many uograde options available for the Remington 597, fortunately this is a good one. This is a comfortable, lightweight, durable stock. It locks up tight and everything works the way it should. The fit looks like it came from the factory with it. I would buy it again! *This is for sporter barrels, not bull barrels.

Decent stock
Fit at barrel was a little off, required a dremel tool. Folding stock was very tight, also had to sand. Overall a nice setup

Old gun new trick
Had an old Remington 597 hanging around with a beat up stock and barrel tip that had been abused by the kids, the wife, and me over the years. Put the barrel on the lath and chopped it to 16.25 inches, re-crowned it, did some semi-cold bluing with Van's, slapped it in this stock. Added an inexpensive red dot and bi-pod, I'm proud to take it to the range again.
Pros:
- Inexpensive
- Good LOP and cheek rise
- Can put in tote bag when folded
Cons:
- A little light in the butt end.
Best Used for:
- plinking
- bragging rights

A LOT nicer than I'd expected
My experience with ProMag prior to this was limited to their notso-hotso magazines. This stock was very well designed and turns out to be MUCH better than I expected; I'm really happy with it.
Install was a piece of cake. The spare rail sections up front were handy for a light. The 597 is accurate from this stock. Stock folds quickly and easily and LOP is pretty good for an average-sized man. Rubber on buttplate isn't necessary on a .22, but it's a nice touch. Your sling weaves right into the slots. The stock looks good and the rifle looks good in it - I wish it had been made this way in the first place. The ability to store stuff inside the pistol grip's trapdoor is pretty nice, too.
Downsides? As others have mentioned, the folding stock REALLY wedges closed and is a little bit of a bear to open. A little filing and waxing helps, but it looks like I still need to do more. The stock also wasn't inexpensive - but it was reasonable and it's a high-quality item as compared to similar stocks I've had in the past. Some sort of ability to store a spare magazine in the stock would have been a treat.
I'm torn - I think I'd give everything about this five stars except for the too-tight-when-folded stock and the price. Overall, it's just a heck of a nice stock - again, I wish it had been on the gun when I bought it back in the mid-Nineties.

A LOT nicer than I'd expected
My experience with ProMag over the years until now has been only with their magazines (uniformly schlock, in my experience), so I was a little worried about this stock despite the good reviews. No reason to worry - this is a fine stock for my 597. The fit and lockup are solid and the ergonomic engineering is remarkably good - way better than I would have expected based on similar aftermarket stocks I've seen for similar .22s WAY back when. An actual rubber butt pad is unnecessary for recoil management but a nice touch for making the thing stick into your shoulder during use.
As others have commented, I did have to file a bit on the tab that locks the stock into its folded position - before the filing it would go on but was murder to pop back off (had to lever it wish a screwdriver). After 30 seconds with a file, everything's groovy. I'm just real impressed with the stock. And the price here on Optics Planet can't be beat.

Pros:
- Well considered ergonomics
Cons:
- Folded stock tab required some fitting

- Improving usefulness of utility 597 rifle
