Most Helpful Positive Review Caution for Mossberg 500 owners
This shotgun shell holder is made of quality materials. It comes with a solid aluminum mounting plate and the actual shell holder is made of durable plastic. A ***CAUTION*** for Mossberg 500 owners with "field" type forends. Double check to make sure your forend does not overlap any part of y...

Most Helpful Negative Review Decent product, but better use loctite on the screws
This was a good product for my Remington 870 Express home defense shot gun. If you have a forend that covers the shell loading area when pulled back, better get the 4 shell version. My 870 had the tactical forend that doesn't cover the shell loading area so I could use the 6 shell version. The ...

Quality Side Saddle

by Chadbone, Verified Owner from IN, United States Written on March 1, 2025
Ordered the 6 shot shell side saddle. Quality product. I've tried the velcro shot shell holders. Drawback to these is the loops loosen up over time and don't hold the shells firmly in place.Plus, I prefer to have a quality piece on the shotgun versus a velcro/cloth piece. This TacStar side saddle holds the shells firmly and is solid. Mounts solidly to the gun. It doesn't state it fits the Winchester Ranger 120 specifically but I took a chance that it would considering similarities and it fit fine. The only modification I had to make was bending the top metal piece back a little for a more flush fit. Not difficult at all using a vice. The only concern you must consider is this type of side saddle has the potential to mar the finish on the gun. I used electrical tape on the back to help prevent this. However, when I install a piece like this to my shotgun I intend for it to be permanent. It's not a piece I will ever consider removing. Very happy with it. Looks great on the gun.
Pros:
  • Holds additional shells securely
  • Looks nice on the shotgun
  • Solid, quality sidesaddle
Cons:
  • Potential marring of the weapon possible
Best Used for:
  • Permanent accessory
  • Additional ammunition held on the gun
  • Easy access to additional ammunition

Best Price (Magpul Mod Needed)

by Caleb, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on June 23, 2024
Great for the price; simple install. Instructions stink but 2 minutes on YouTube and I had it installed. Nice capacity addition if you’re looking for that. (NOTE: On a 590 Shockwave w/ Magpul forend, too some modifications on the forend to get the fit right. No biggie but just be aware there’s some Dremel tooling involved.)

Screw too short

by J, from CA, United States Written on January 16, 2021
The 10/24 screw to hold the side saddle was too short. Tac star sent a replacement attachment kit and the screw is the same size, too short. I read that others had the same problem and stated to not purchase. Waste of money

TacStar - reasonable and solid

by CTA, from TX, United States Written on October 28, 2020
My first side saddle Holds shells well, flexes for wider diameter. Fair price and value. Install was easy though instructions are a bit lite for a first timer. All in all seems to do the job, Rome will tell how it runs and holds up to training and drills - seems to be built to the task

Extra fire power

by Lil Gary, from IL, United States Written on November 4, 2018
It needs to fit a little tighter to the weapon it moves a bit for my standards. It was easy to put on the weapon and looks and functions good. The construction of the product is good and made well and holds the extra rounds securely to the weapon

Shotshell holder

by Kinkos, from AZ, United States Written on October 9, 2018
Got this for my mossberg. Was opting for a more expense won but the reviews lead me to this. It works great holds shells upside down fine through any kind of round count, but easy to download and load.

Does what it shoud!

by Wm Palmer, Verified Owner from SC, United States Written on July 3, 2018
These shell carriers have been around for a long time. They work, if mounted correctly. There are some issues. Make sure the forearm on your shotgun does not overlap where the carrier will sit....you need to use a "short" forearm for this to position properly. The screws that are used to mount this replace the orig two pins that hold the fire control group. You need to be careful not to over torque or stress these when mounting. You need to torque them properly or you will deform the receiver and cause functioning issue and possible ruin the firearm...Yes, it happens! I prefer the velcro rip off style now, because these hard carriers take up too much room when you place the firearm in a safe. It is what it is.

Use them both professionally and personally excellent piece of equipment. It is designed well at a excellent price it is adaptable. Would highly recommended and is an excellent buy. The piece can be used easily by a novice or professional and when in use does not impede the operation of the weapon.
