Most Helpful Positive Review One of the Best/Only Options
If you have a DPMS LR 308 with a hi rise receiver and carbine gas system, this is one of the only free float hand guards available. Fortunately it is a good one. I have a Troy DI Battle Rail on a different AR-15 that I have mounted an Eotech on and it has held zero through several carbine classes with rock solid lockup. Troy is good quality and the price and shipping through Optics Planet was great. Again, highly suggest if you own a DPMS pattern 308 with hi-rise receiver and recommend Optics Planet.

Disappointed

I thought I'd splurge a little and get this on sale, think I paid 75$ for it. In my opinion that was about 70$ too much. It's a wobbly poorly designed waste of money and aluminum. The inner surface of the handguard has deep fat splines, I have no opinion on it specifically other than it makes it unnecessarily heavy without aggressive lightening cuts. Theoretically it's a good idea and it would very positively engage with an appropriately matched barrel nut and keep it from rotating or shifting on the nut. Problem is the id is bored out where it interfaces with the barrel nut and the nut itself was splined appropriately to match the handguard before the od was turned down so only a small trace of spline remains. The 1/8" gap in the bottom of the handguard is almost completely closed by the time it starts to get tight on the nut, and from past experience with cheap handguards using a similar mount it won't hold because the surfaces aren't parallel. I'm glad I got it on sale but I'm not glad I got it. I'll be sticking to the 35-50$ handguards that use the simple mounting method of 6 cap screws into a long barrel nut and most likely avoiding any more high dollar handguards I don't see in the wild first.
Pros:
  • It's heavy, so it'll sink well.
Cons:
  • Overpriced
Best Used for:
  • Paperweights and ballast

I would love to get this with keymod or MLoK added. Otherwise perfect

Great handguard no complaints, could be oz lighter.. instead use T7075 and make cuts for keymod or Mlock modular attachment system in the rail to reduce weight add ventilation. I've had this my LR-308 build for 2-3 years now. If it was keymod, it would be the perfect carbine .308 solution.

Troy rail for LR .308

by Nate Pappas, Verified Owner from FL, United States Written on January 24, 2017
Troy makes excellent free float rails. Easy to install on my LR .308. Instructions were easy to follow. Upon install the fit and finish on the rifle was solid no play. And after 200 rounds down range no issues.
