Most Helpful Positive Review Wonderful Product.
Well it was either the Vortex Razor HD 8x42 or the Leupold Santiam HD. I was totally locked up in the pre-purchase decision making process. Read everything I could. Bugged the heck out of both manufacturers not to mention the wonderful customer service of OpticsPlanet. Then one day a special came t...

Most Helpful Negative Review Vortex shouldn't have move manufacturing to China
I think it was a bad decision for Vortex to move manufacturing to China. I just bought a new Vortex Razor HD 8x42 that was made in China from B&H. Usually, I don't require any diopter adjustment. Even with diopter adjusted to it's maximum my right eye could not be focused. The binocular was totally ...

Observations and thoughts on the Razor HD 8x42's

by Perfectionist, Verified Owner from UT, United States Written on August 23, 2024
When I initially purchased these, I was expecting a "Made in Japan" mark beneath the eye cup. When I received the item and saw a "Assy in Philippines" mark, I was initially left with some concern that they might not have the same build quality that Japanese assembly lines can provide. After a few days of testing and consideration, I was left questioning whether or not "Made in Japan" or "Made in Germany" marked optics carry the same leverage that they used to. After browsing the internet to clarify my misconception toward the country these upper end Vortex optics are manufactured in, it is my understanding that Vortex employs Japanese workers to oversee the manufacturing of their higher end products in remote facilities to ensure their quality expectations are met. I am fortunate enough to have a small amount of exposure to the culture in the Philippines and I have consistently seen high levels of integrity and professionalism in both their education and their career paths, which is the foundation of a strong, capable workforce, regardless of which country they reside in. It's reassuring to know that Vortex chose a location with a skilled and respectful workforce rather than opting for more questionable alternatives; Outsourcing their manufacturing facilities is also what results in the reduced cost at the consumer level.

The build quality is very good and consistent with what I'd expect from a high end optical product, with no manufacturing defects or issues. The glass is e...

I recently purchased the Vortex Razor HD 8X42mm Binoculars for my wife. I looked at other brands and liked the compact feel and weight of these. The glass clarity is great. It came with strap for the Binoculars as well as a nice case with chest harness to carry. Good field of view.
Pros:
  • Good case
  • GREAT GLASS , GREAT PRICE

Good set of binoculars

by Trav, from MN, United States Written on June 13, 2018
I bought these for a trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota. They worked great. Very clear and light. They replaced an 8 year old pair of Vortex Viper 10x40 binoculars (now my daughters pair). The added fov is very noticeable and good as I went back and forth between getting the 8x or 10 version. I picked the 8x version and they worked perfectly. I could glass on elk from over 1000 yards and pick up on pronghorn size from plenty far away. I'd buy them again.

Best binoculars in this price range

by Buglemintoday, from TX, United States Written on July 3, 2017
These are very close to Swarovski quality, and I would rate above Ziess or Leupold. Very bright and have tested at Dawn or Dusk. Am able to pick up fine details of grassy meadows or dark timber in the mountains in the middle of the day or at last shooting light. I was able to see almost 30 minutes later through these than my Leupold VX3 6.5-20x50 with 30mm tube riflescope...even with it set at 6.5x.

Very impressive pair of binoculars at a great price point. And Vortex has a no questions asked warranty so you can feel confident taking them into the field. mud, rocks, rain, shine if anything happens they will repair or replace them for you
Pros:
  • Price
  • Lightweight
  • easy to use
  • bright
  • no fogging up
  • Eyecups adjust easy
Cons:
  • None for me
Best Used for:
  • hunting
  • Bird watching
  • spotting game

Excellent Binos

by HikingPhotog, from GA, United States Written on December 19, 2015
After reading multiple reviews of the Vortex Razor 8X42 binocular and comparing the specs of it and several competitors, I decided to buy. A great decision! They are sharp, bright and solidly constructed. They are lightweight and easy to quickly focus. These are the first binoculars I have purchased in this price range, but the improvement in quality over my lesser priced binoculars is worth the added cost. As a wildlife and bird photographer, a great pair of binoculars is necessary. These binoculars give me the edge, and with Vortex's lifetime warranty, I am satisfied they may be the last binocular I'll need. Optics Planet is my go to store for this type of glass. Great products at the best price and customer service. That's what I call a win-win.
Pros:
  • Warranty
  • Close focus
  • Superior quality
  • Clarity/brightness is outstanding
Cons:
  • None.
Best Used for:
  • Birdwatching
  • Wildlife watching
