Quality control issues.

Written on Mar 24, 2023

Ordered two of these. One needs a little breakin but I think will run smooth after but the other is way out of spec. Can't hardly get the barrel inside the slide, binds up on the frame when pulled back (with or without the barrel installed). Needs serious help to be a functional slide. I realize these are less expensive lides, but they still need to be in spec or else they are worthless.

Exceptional value

Written on Dec 18, 2022

Let’s be clear. This is not $2k glass. I wish the mount was quick release. But the combined value of a 1-10x FFP with a mount in this price range is incredible. Glass is good given the price range. Mount is solid. One really cool thing is the practical markings. Scope has a centerline to level it in the mount visually with no tools. Mount has torque settings etched directly into it. Very practical and convenient.

Exchanges Gen 1 Problems for a whole new set

Written on Dec 11, 2022

I wanted so bad for this to be an improvement over Gen 1. So let's start with the positivies.

The way the pistol group mounts and secures the safety detent pin and spring is vastly improved. This one works like any other proper milspec grip. No more cheesy rubber plug that I'm afraid is going to fall out when the rifle is bumped the wrong way. This also isn't so dependant on your lower being exactly milspec for contour between the grip and the buffer. The shape is very "tacticool" but I'm not sure how practical as others have mentioned.

Now the problems. Build quality is questionable in certain areas like the length of pull extension. I'm not sure I trust that to be extended. It definately could have been designed in a more durable way. The fact that it only works on a rifle buffer is just stupid and poor design. This could have easily been designed to work on both like the PRS stocks. Also, there is no screen to attach to the rifle buffer. In my experience, the buffer tube comes without and assumes the stock will come with one. Apparently Hera never imagined you install this on a brand new rifle build and only thought it would ever be used as an upgrade with an existing screw cause this stock doesn't come with one either. Now I'm off to order a screw as a replacement part, pay more for shipping than the screw is worth and wait days to complete my build because neither Aero or Hera could be othered to throw in a screw.

May not fit but nice stock if it does

Written on Nov 05, 2022

If you have a real DPMS from the old days, this will fit perfectly. The problem is that there are too many clones of 308 receivers running around that do not have the same contours as the original DPMS. They work for DPMS style builds because the “important” dimensions are correct for location of trigger pins and so on but the external cosmetic dimensions are out of spec. If you use just about any other stock that just mounts to the buffer tube and doesn’t follow the contour of the lower, you would never realize it. But to be truthful, these stocks are not the issue and you shouldn’t be rating them poorly for not fitting. If this doesn’t fit, don’t take it out on the review of the stock. Take it out on the review of the receiver. The receiver is the part that’s screwed up and out of spec from the original DPMS design.

So close to 5 stars

Written on Sep 16, 2022

Ordered two of these to update Fulton Armory uppers to MLok and QD Sling. FA is a true DPMS low profile pattern. The handguard fits nice, is relatively easy to install as long as you are comfortable removing and reinstalling your gas block and looks nice. Mates up to the FA receiver well also.

The only complaint I have is that MI sends a plastic MLok piece so you have a 5 slot rail out of the box. I know, they didn't have to include anything and send you off to buy MLok rail pieces on your own but come on man! You're Midwest Industries. You guys are supposed to be some of the best parts in the industry! Send a metal Mlok rail!

Stop bashing this knife just for it's orgin

Written on May 12, 2022

Let's get this out of the way. This knife is made in China. I would prefer it be made in the US like most Buck Knives. I don't know why it wasn't. I imagine it would cost more if it were. Probably upwards of $100 like the Padre which is Buck's recommendation for a US made knife that is similar. It doesn't cost that much though. It is significantly less, because it is made in China.

That said, this is a very well made knife in it's price range. The fit and finish are excellent. The Handle is very comfortable. The blade came very sharp. It still carries the Buck Forever warranty. Per Buck's website it has the Bos heat treat like the US made knives.

I own a LOT of Buck brand knives from the venerable 119 to some of their less traditional designs like the 060 Hoodlum and 808 Talon. All of them are US made except my Selkirks. But when you compare them for fit and finish, there is no difference. The Selkirks are right at home with the other knives and they deserve the Buck name like all the others.

I did take one star off because I do wish it was a US made knife. That's really my only complaint about it. But that is only one characteristic. Otherwise, it's a fine knife, especially for its price range. Please stop trashing this knife based on one single characteristic and evaluate it as a knife and not simply for where it was manufactured.

Adequate Knife. Terrible Sheath

Written on Apr 20, 2022

Knife seems well made with decent fit and finish for a foreign knife.

The sheath needs work. Actually, the sheath needs thrown away. Worthless. Not Kydex. It's injection molded. It really doesn't fit the form of the knife and really doesn't latch on to the knife life properly formed Kydex. There is an adjustment to control how tightly the knife fits into the sheath, but there seems to be no right adjustment. If the knife is tight enough that I trust it not to fall out during a fall or a tussle with man or beast, then it becomes very difficult to draw the knife. If the knife is easy to draw, it feels like it's going to fall out of the sheath at the slightest disturbance.

All the missing bits

Written on Mar 01, 2021

These bits are a perfect addition to the large Wheeler set. Good quality. In a way I'd like to give them far less stars though. I'm mad that these should have been included in the set to begin with. These are all the standard bits (hex, torx, etc) that you'd expect to need to work on a lot of modern firearms, AR's, etc. While the main set is a nice collection of all the super rare specialty bits needed for special one off firearm applications, I was very disappointed that it didn't include all the standard "toolbox" bits typically used for more modern stuff.

Many of us won't ever use 50% of the bits in the main set unless you're an actual gunsmith and see a lot of strange things come in your shop. But if you're an enthusiast and wanted a dedicated, quality set of bits just for working on fire arms, the main set is really a disappointment because it doesn't come with the bits you need the most. My feeling was buy the big set and then I'm covered if I run into something strange. But I wasn't even covered for the normal stuff!

Shame on Wheeler! These bits need integrated into the main set for a reasonable price. What is happening here is highway robbery selling it as an addon, but hey, I have the main set. Might as well bring it up to what it should have been in the first place and buy the over priced addon also cause I spend big bucks already on the main set and it really doesn't do what I need.

Note: I don't fault optics planet for this. They are simply selling what Wheeler

This is it! Nothing better (except for one scenario)

Written on Jan 07, 2021

I'm not sure where I bought mine from, I can't find it in my OP order history but I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Less than a heartbeat.

There is no faster, easier way to level a scope. I have just about everything another well know company makes for leveling scopes with all sorts of bubble levels that clamp on barrel and sit on rails and and levels that sit on the elevation cap of the scope you can throw it all away. That stuff is clumsy and honestly not very accurate no matter how careful you are with it.

Mount you rings on the rifle, mount your scope loosely in the rings (loose enough you can move it and tight enough that it stays when moved) and jam the grooved plate and one of the wedges between the rail on the rifle and the flat part on the bottom of the scope under the elevation dial. Make the flat of the scope square with the wedge and you're done. Works on both traditional rings and cantilever mounts.

About the only place this hasn't worked for me is my Remington 700 because there is nothing under the flat bottom of the scope. It has two short pieces of rail, one in front and one behind that action. I expect you'll have a similar challenge with many of the bolt actions on the market. In that case you might have to hate life and go back to the bubble levels. But anything with a continuous rail or flat surface under the scope, this tool will have you level in about 30 seconds.

All right for the price

Written on Dec 20, 2020

Glass seems ok for the price. Eye relief is about right for my mini 14 scouts and M1a scouts. My only real complaint is that the windage and elevation dials are super squishy and have almost no click. Sometimes you can’t feel the next notch at all. There is no excuse for that in this day an age. I have 4 of these between my wife and I and all are exactly the same so it’s not a one off defect. They’re just made poorly.
