Vortex Venom 3MOA

Written on Dec 30, 2021

I bought this to mount on top of my Vortex 1-6 Viper PST. I was very disappointed when I discovered the elevation (up/down) was extremely limited. So much so, that I was not able to zero the dot. My goal was to have passive aiming for night vision applications as well as a 2.26ish high rise solution for short range applications (similar to the unity F.A.S.T mount solution).

Another con pertaining to the windage/elevation adjustment is the requirement of a special tool. Most dots I have come across can be adjusted by brass casings or typical EDC tools you may carry or have in your range bag. I typically always have Fixit Sticks and a Leatherman in arms reach, but this optic requires an extremely small gauge flathead screwdriver to make adjustments. Not a huge deal, but icing on the cake after the elevation bottomed out.

1st Odin Product

Written on Dec 02, 2021

Purchased this rail for a 13.9 5.56 build. Love the look and quality of the build. The barrel nut is unique and relatively easy to install. The gas tool this unit comes with was a little loose on the Anderson receiver I used for the 13.9 build. This caused the rail not to align with the barrel on the first install attempt. To correct this, I backed the nut back of of the build and put a thing layer of tape on the portion of the tool that enters the gas port outlet on the upper receiver. This solved the problem and allowed me to torque everything to spec while maintaining alignment. Love the look of this particular Odin rail. The others are too busy for my preference.

VSM Upper Receiver Block

Written on Nov 30, 2021

So far so good. I used this to build my first upper. Torque specs pertaining to the barrel nut seem to be a hot topic. So far I've had no issues with applying more than 35lbs of torque to a barrel nut or anything else for that matter. I typically torque to the manufacturers recommendation. I have parts in route for a second build for a friend. I will say, Ballistic Advantage has a solid YouTube channel that shows tips and tricks for assembly. It is wise to do your research prior to installing barrels & torqueing anything to spec. Also ensure you have the actual block torqued properly. The hex screws on the bottom of the block are easy to forget about. Always make sure they are tightened properly.

The only con: I believe it would be relatively easy to incorporate a barrel torque bit on the front of the block to relieve the upper receiver from some of the tension. That said, I find that tightening and backing of the barrel nut three to 4 times typically has the desired outcome for torque specs and rail/barrel alignment.

YHM Phantom 5.56 QD Flash Hider

Written on Nov 27, 2021

This is my 2nd QD mount from YHM brokered by Optics Planet. I run a Resonator2 .30 cal on my 10.5" 300 BLK out (AR), 13.9" 5.56 (AR), and 16" 7.62x54 (AK). They all perform exceptionally well for the price point. I'm a big fan of this QD system and YHM suppressors in general due to the ability to replace wearable parts to prolong the life of the suppressor. They are not the prettiest things to looks at, but great functionality and price. I run suppressed 90% of the time anyways. Due to YHMS performance and affordability, you get extra spending power on more important part of your build.

YHM Phantom .30 CAL

Written on Oct 26, 2021

Great option for platforms with LH threads. Put this on a VSKA I panic purchased during the pandemic. I'm now able to go between AK & AR platforms with ease. Some dislike the YHM QD mount setup, but I prefer the ability to replace the ratchetting system as needed. That said, both QD mounts I have from YHM have have given me zero issues on a flat range, training courses, or out in the North GA mountains (all seasons). No issues with the reversed ratchet system. First mount has over a 1000 rounds of 300 blk. I have put around 300 round on the LH YHM Phantom. Quality is there!

Drop universal Belt Loop

Written on Apr 22, 2019

Exactly what I was looking for. Almost made the mistake of ordering the 2.00". Ultimately, most of the guys I shoot with have not problems with the 2.00" ( even if they are not using a duty belt etc.). I'm rocking the single strap between the UBL and Safariland holster. Currently waiting on a back ordered els kit to complete the setup.

Would absolutely recommend for non-duty belt folks

Pro Shot Spec Ops 3 Gun Cleaning kit

Written on Apr 22, 2019

Somewhat disappointed in the size and some of the inventory quantities. Pas that, fits on my range kit just well and has everything I need in case I need to solve some range problems (past extreme failure of parts). The kit is much smaller than anticipated, but fits on belt or plate carrier with no problems.

Tacfire AR15 15in KeyMod

Written on Aug 09, 2018

Very impressed with the price and quality of the rail. Straight forward installation. The black finish seemed to be properly applied (I will likely paint it anyways). My goal was to build a budget 18 inch AR15 that is light. This rail completed the build and provides some solid weight savings. I don't run a light or for grip so the lack of recoil nuts with the picatinny attachments is not a deal breaker. For the price, I do not think there is anything on the market that compares. I have seen a lot of look a likes on Wish and Jet with solid reviews, but I trust Optics Planet a little more.

Rothco Lightweight Plate Carrier

Written on Jun 12, 2018

Had read/watched nothing but good reviews.

I'm not military and hoped to only depend on this in a self defense/active shooter situation. I purchased this to train on the range and in the gym. Out of the box it felt pretty good and decent quality. I was worried about the shoulder straps. I put two 10x12 level III plates with trauma pads. They fit snug, I personally did not realize the dimensions of the carrier are 10X13. So the top was a bit floppy. This brought the carriers weight to 17lbs (plus or minus). The built in mag pouches worked well and the admin pouch has pistol mag inserts (cool, but would likely never use).

Prior to the range test, I used this vest for a workout. The Crossfit box I workout in does Murph every memorial day. I thought. "What better way to test this plate carrier?" Now that I think about it, I did use it for a body weight workout prior to Murph.

Murph
1 mile run
100 pull ups
200 push ups
300 air squats
1 mile run

must use 20lbs plate carrier

Long story short, the straps started to rip from the front plate carrier (about half way through). Two uses and the thing is falling apart to a state that is not usable or easy to fix. Do not waste your money on look a like Crye JPC plate carriers. I doubt this thing would hold up in Airsoft (not an Airsofter)!?

I reached out to both Rothco and OpticsPlanet to see if this was just a quality control thing. Nothing could be done and I was out of time to return.
