Kimber 1911 upgrade

Written on Jul 17, 2021

I bought this magazine to supplement the OEM mag on my Kimber 1911 Custom II 10mm government size. It fits and feeds fine. I haven't added a base pad yet. It seems to be well constructed inside and out.

Update to my review

After using this mount a couple times, I’m upping my rating. The weight is comparable to other heavy duty QD mounts. The price is competitive with them as well. Trijicon’s mount is $300! And I’m sure the Trijicon is excellent, but the Midwest mount is a good alternative.

The QD design could be improved, but if you’re careful with your initial setup, it’s solid and should hold up to regular removal and installation for a long time. If you’re not careful setting it up, you can easily damage it. As always, read the instructions.

Too heavy and pricey

Written on Jun 17, 2021

I have a couple Leupold Mark AR 30mm mounts. They're solid, lightweight, and they work perfectly, but they're mounted with 5 bolts. I wanted to try a QD mount instead. I bought this Midwest Industries mount, and I don't think it's worth the price. It's heavy. It feels secure and the QD works well, but the Leupold mounts cost half the price (around $80) and provides a precise reattachment every time. The Midwest mount feels indestructible, but the Leupold mount feels plenty sturdy too. If you drop your rifle hard enough to break the mount, you probably need a new scope too.

Update to my review

The new Vortex Spitfire HD Gen II 3x Prism has better battery management than the previous model. The new one automatically shuts off after 14 hours. I wish it was half that, but it’s an upgrade from the old Spitfire. The old one didn’t have an automatic shutdown at all.

Clear, Lightweight, and Simple

Written on Jun 17, 2021

Vortex made a lot of changes to the Spitfire 3x Prism. I bought this as an upgrade from the previous version Spitfire 3x Prism EBR-556B. I really like both.

New One: Sleek, simple, clear, lightweight, sturdy, rubber bikini caps, more brightness settings

Old One: Clear, sturdy, came with quicker but heavier mount, red and green reticle choices, farther eye relief. Flip up caps. Heavy, large footprint, string hangs off for battery cap

So, the new Spitfire is lighter (9.3 vs 15.4 Oz) and sleeker (no clutter of flip up caps, extra rails, extra battery cover and string). Both have quick target acquisition. I actually prefer the old flip up caps and green reticle choice. I don’t miss the old rails, battery cap and string. I think I’ll just have to get another rifle and keep both Spitfires.

Nice light. Doesn’t fit 590M

Written on Jun 15, 2021

This is a pretty well designed racker that unfortunately doesn’t fit the Mossberg 590M, the magazine version of the 590. The magazine feed configuration extends forward further than other Mossberg 500/590 models leaving less room for a racker than the Streamlight requires. The Streamlight is 1 to 2” too long.

I’m also not sure it needs so many on/off surfaces. It seems too easy to accidentally turn on/off. I held one, but haven’t used one installed though.

Great reticle

Written on Jun 13, 2021

This scope has great glass that extends your evening. I even use it at night when the moon is out. The Firedot is excellent and I hope Leupold continues with the reticle and lighting adjustment settings on other scopes. As someone with not the best eyesight, I appreciate the multiple reticle settings and colors for different conditions. 3x9x40 is a nice setup for me personally, although I may look into higher max range options now available.

Well padded and spacious

Written on Jun 13, 2021

I bought this case for occasional travel with on or two rifles plus supplies. For those that travel a lot with expensive equipment, I highly recommend this. It’s well padded and durable.

On the other hand, it’s total overkill for occasional users. Bulky and heavy. I stopped using it and switched to a cheap electric guitar gig bag. For two rifles I use the Condor or gun socks in a gig bag.

Great value

I’m impressed with mine. I just bought a second one. I couldn’t justify the price of the premium brand for a light. The Inforce Lights fit securely, are ergonomically comfortable for me, and put out all the light I need. I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of the strobe either. After several hundred rounds on an AR, and a hundred or so on a 12 gauge they work fine.

A necessity

Written on Jun 13, 2021

I use a Sightmark Wraith sporadically on two rifles, and this QD mount is perfect. It attaches securely and easily, saving me time. It wasn’t cheap in my opinion, but it was worth it. I have no complaints.
