This was an extended back order item here but I found one via another vendor. Same model number and construction. Confirmed it is the same product based on the original announcement in Police One magazine.
Saying this is the lightest 10x12 Level IV plate is a pure gimmick. The plate is 10x12 but the ceramic section is only about 8x10. You can feel the edge of the ceramic under the thin cloth cover. I guess they could make it even lighter by making the ceramic 4x4. This is a level III plate with a level IV overlay and is not NIJ spec so there will be no independent quality control.
The cloth cover is likely not going to stand up to any handling and provides no protection from sweat or moisture. You can feel the layers separating under the cover at the corners. Expected a lot more at this price point. Cannot return it and don't trust it.
If you are required (or just concerned) to have a manual security device on your magazines this is the best option. It looks open, but the tab actually holds the magazine in place and mechanically prevents it from falling out. Once the mag is loaded (the retention does not work with empty mags) the spring tension in the mag locks it in place. Just bumping the lever in the exact natural way you would index the magazine and it slides out just like an true open top.
The stagger allows you to sweep right over the empty and hit the next.
I was very impressed with this Thermosight. I have experience with much larger and more expensive thermal devices and can say that for the money, this one will likely do everything you want it to without paying 10K or having to use special battery packs.
It came in a protective hard case and included a spare battery orientation clip. Controls are firm and take very little time to get oriented. I only used the spectrum (color palate) and zoom features once I got the rest set to where I wanted it. The game finder feature is good, so long as you are slow and smooth when sweeping an area. The new faster 60hz refresh right is a welcome upgrade from older units at 40hz.
Using the quick release, at least in warm weather, you can even navigate by using this as a monocular and then re-mount once you get to your stand or wherever you are going.
No, you can't really discern much about the target as they will be the color blob of your choice. That said, unless you are trying to discriminate between two similar coyotes or two hogs, the reticle is fine for kill zone shooting.
The first thing you will notice, especially if you have handled higher end versions, is the weight. Consider this on your rifle as being like having a quart of milk mounted on top. That is without the included light. Setting that aside, the controls are easy to reach and simple to operate.
There are back up iron sights on top of the unit that are actually adjustable.
There is a 25 and infinity knob that I could not decide did anything in particular.
The strap tethering the adjustment knobs and battery cover is just a bit tight which makes taking the battery in and out a bit of a bother. I found taking one elevation cap off introduced enough slack to use the battery compartment as putting the elevation cap back on was easier as there is no spring pressure as with the battery.
Do follow the directions as to focus. Dial it all the way right (Clockwise) then get your eye relief and dial it back to find your focus.
I evaluated targets (a group of friends) while holding this in hand at 160 yards and could make out articles of clothing, facial hair, phones on belts. I could recognize who they were. Plenty of discernment for target identification and selection. I estimate that would hold true out to around 200 yards.
You may notice a bit of "fisheye" when sweeping a field due to image process speed.
