High end glass at a low price

by Jeremy L., Gear Expert from IL, United States Written on November 23, 2015
This might just be the highest value spotting scope on the market at the time I'm writing this review. Upon pulling it out of the box, you'll notice it's wrapped in an extremely well thought out padded case. After zippering the case open is when you really get excited. The construction and fit and finish are that of meticulous craftsmanship. The tough rubber housing literally has zero imperfections and trust me I looked over every square inch of it.

All of the adjustments for the sunshade, focus ring and magnification are stupidly smooth and precise. After messing around with the spotting scope I already knew what I was in store for when bringing it out to the field.

I set this Meopro HD 80 up overlooking a wide open field around 3pm and quickly had a feel for the focus and was able to easily spot and zoom in on random birds that made their way into my view. While this is not "THE BEST GLASS EVER" it really is extremely pleasing to the eye and from what I can tell theres no distortion or chromatic aberration.

One thing that I was really fond of was using this spotting scope in conjunction with Meopta's Iphone 57mm Meopix Iscoping adapter, which allows you to take some pretty impressive quality photos as distance.

All in all its an excellent choice for anyone with a budget between $1,200-$1,600 that doesn't mind lugging around a little extra weight.
Most Helpful Positive Review Great Spotter for Range or Hunting
You don't realize how bad your current glass is until you invest in a high quality optic. The MeoPro HD80 has served me well both on the range and while hunting. The clarity is amazing, and you do not experience any eye strain like to do with cheap glass. This spotter will rotate a full 180, so y...

Most Helpful Negative Review Please be careful
I bought this scope after I thought I did a good job of research. Very disappointed. Not clear, not sharp, somewhat like looking through gauze or cheesecloth. Yes, I have adjusted and did my best to get a clear sharp image. To no avail. I feel that I paid a lot of money for what I believed was a qua...

Absolutely not worth it

by Rich, Verified Owner from MT, United States Written on October 5, 2021
Keep on looking, this scope is extremely disappointing. I have seen scopes at half the price that are significantly better than this scope. Hazy dull images.... Meopta makes great optics but this is definitely not one of them. I gave it to stars because it's rugged and compact for an 80mm.
Pros:
  • rugged
Cons:
  • Clarity
  • Sharpness
Best Used for:
  • do not buy
  • DO NOT USE

A little disappointed

by Ultimate Volunteer, Verified Owner from TN, United States Written on January 28, 2019
After doing a lot of research I thought this scope would be the best thing I could get under $2000, but what I got was a little disappointed. I have a Vortex Skyline that cost me $400, (had it since about 2011 & they have changed the name of this model to diamondback or viper) so I compared the two side by side. The Meopta has a clear image and is a bit brighter, but the eye relief is a little to close, only about 1" - 1 1/2". Comparing it to my Vortex at 300 yds I couldn't tell very much difference between them, the Meopta was a little brighter but I didn't see $1000 difference between them. I'm mainly using this scope for benchrest and the trouble that I've been having is at 300 yds its difficult to make out 6.5mm holes unless you have 2 or 3 that are close together.
The Meopta is a good scope it's very well built, but after comparing it to my old Vortex I just can't see spending that much money when I'm not gaining anything. Guess I'll have to do some more research and maybe find some store locally that will let me compare scopes side by side. That's the only way I can think of to see what I'm getting without having to order one and send it back.
Pros:
  • Well built, Bright clear image
Cons:
  • A little Pricey for what you get

Excellent clarity

by Jim, from MI, United States Written on December 21, 2018
The glass is phenomenal. I was considering the Nightforce and Vortex HD. So glad I went with the Meopta. Priced well below competitive scopes. Will use on moose hunts and whitetail this season. I was extremely surprised how lightweight the product was given its size.

Just amazing glass

by Chili Dog, Verified Owner from NJ, United States Written on July 8, 2018
i was showing it off the other day and at about 300 yards, you could clearly see individual needles on a pine tree. The original purpose was for the range, but now i've ordered a Novagrade adapter for my Canon DSLR. Aside from digiscoping, I can wifi the target image to my smart phone see my grouping as i shoot. The scope is is well made, amazing glass and I'm totally satisfied. The scope is back heavy and it will probably need a balance rail for the tripod.

Sweet Sweet spotter!

by Wick, Verified Owner from NV, United States Written on April 28, 2018
I had my eye on this one for a long time and finally able to afford it, was very excited to get it and I'm not
disappointed to say the least. Having looked through some $2-3k plus spotters, at least for me, the differences are
not worth the extra cost. I am confident I have the spotting scope that is everything I will ever want and or need.

The carry case that comes with it is a good one however I opted to get a NIghtforce TS-80 case for the extra storage space and being a harder shell for added protection. It fits absolutely perfectly as well as the stay on cover by Nightforce.

My magnification dial did seem to have a tiny bit of play and at first would get slightly stuck at the max magnification
setting. Calling Meopta, I was pleasantly surprised that their customer service is excellent and fast. I was actually
contemplating not calling at all as the issue was so minor and in fact worked it's way smoother and possibly just needed a bit of breaking in... but the rep I spoke to said let's take a look at it. I sent it in as instructed, within a couple of days after they received it, a brand spankin new one was sent to me. I have to say that I am very impressed and am 100% that I made the right choice with this spotter and this top notch company.

I dealt with a big name company with a red dot optic that was defective, I'll leave unnamed but it is arguably #1, definitely a top 2 or 3 optic company and let me tell you it was a painful process, it w...

Great European Glass!

by MP12, from TX, United States Written on January 11, 2018
I have been a huge Meopta fan for a long time, and I have used them all. The clarity and transmission on this scope is amazing. Of course, if I could afford it, I would buy Meopta's high end S2 scope, but for the money, there is no other spotting scope I would use. These guys have made products for all the top brands and they are truly the best kept secret in optics. Just be aware that this scope has a non-removable eyepiece so if you like changing eyepieces it probably isnt for you, but I've never felt need.
Pros:
  • Transmission, Clarity, Resolution, Styling, Ruggedness
Cons:
  • non-removable eyepiece

Great scope

by DRMULEYAZ28, from AZ, United States Written on November 16, 2017
This is my first scope purchase and I’m not disappointed. The clarity is great and the view bright, but I do have to mention that the sweet spot is most definitely 40x zoom after that the brightness dims a bit and the focus is pretty finicky at full power but with the right conditions it is totally usable up to 60x. The build is solid and the scope looks great, this scope does pack some pounds so be ready for that also. This is meoptas second tier spotter, and honestly I’m gonna probably be upgrading to the meostar S2 after this season because I hear that’s even better, but this scope will definitely do its job, especially for me, which is hunting primarily in wide open country. It takes some getting used to and some practice but once you do, you’ll find that this scope is more than adequate for most tasks and at a great price to boot. Overall I’m satisfied with my purchase and recommend this scope to anyone that may be in the market for a mid tier spotter.

MeoPro vs big name spotting scopes

by JD, Verified Owner from VA, United States Written on May 11, 2017
Had the opportunity to compare several spotting scope that cost twice or more than my Meopro HD 80 at a shooting match and I was amazed at the quality. Most all of my fellow shooters have never heard of Meoptic and were amazed at the quality of the glass.

Impressed with the HD80

by Toby, from WY, United States Written on December 24, 2016
Although I have only had my Meopta HD80 for 2 weeks now I am impressed with the quality of build and clarity of the glass. I still have yet to take it out in the field or to the range for any kind of in depth review, but I am certain that it will not disappoint.

I have taken a few pictures using the adapter that come with it using my Iphone 6. The adapter does help with looking through the spotting scope making it very easy on the eyes. Obviously the clarity isn't there while using it, still its a nice addition, also when dusk hits the phone brings extra light to the dark areas.

It is a little on the heavy side, but unless you are going on an extremely long walk while hunting I believe it will be quite manageable weight wise. Only real time usage in the field will tell me if the money spent was worth it, but again I believe it will be.

Meopta does not disappoint!

by D-Day, Verified Owner from FL, United States Written on January 13, 2016
This scope is world-class glass without the giant price tag. Workmanship is absolutely perfect.I believe this glass rivals Zeiss,Swarovski and Leica for thousands less. Meopta has been making world-class class since 1933, two years before Carl Zeiss. They continue today with this American-made Meopro. It also comes with a lifetime warranty and first class service.I spoke with Barbara at Meopta Corporate in NY and even though she was in Texas at a tradeshow she still responded to my email and provided me with the information and accessories I had inquired about. Meopta represents the very finest scope you can buy for the very best price. You cannot go wrong.
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • Highest quality at affordable price
Best Used for:
  • none
