How Does the Handguard Mount to the Barrel?
There are two basic handguard mounting designs: free-float handguards and drop-in handguards.
There are some key differences between free-float and drop-in handguards. A free-float handguard is only mounted to the barrel nut and doesn’t touch the barrel at all (hence the name). Drop-in handguards are held in place by the handguard cap and delta ring assembly. This difference in mounting designs means that the free-floating handguards are more stable and don’t require any delta ring at all. However, drop-in handguards are lighter and tend to cost less.
