Good for semiautomatic rifle

Written on Aug 09, 2025

16” barrel Number of Shots 14
Average of All Shots 1051 Feet/Sec
Extreme Spread 50 Feet/Sec
Standard Deviation 14 Feet/Sec
Temperature 90
Barometric Pressure 30.09
Bullet Weight 42 grains need 30 shots to be statistically correct, but thought this might help. BC = .112 keep in mind to also test CCI Standard 1070 as it benchmarks similar and is cheaper. Which is more accurate for you , can’t help you there.

Good for heavier game

Written on Apr 18, 2025

Test 22” barrel 6 rounds 71 degrees, near sea level avg vel 2682, 42 extreme spread, 2874 ft/lb muzzle. Copper mono type bullets generally Must have 2000 fps minimum velocity to open which means this is good to 400 yds. (1665 ft lbs) This particular round velocity can be as low as 1800 fps per Nosler tech data. I was sub 1 MOA at 200 yds.

Reliable, durable

Written on Apr 07, 2024

Have used the 5,10,20 Grendel versions and the 7.62x39 in 5,10,20,28,32 (I believe) versions since 2018. A couple had issues and Duramag replaced them. That would be 2 failures out of about 28 magazines. These get used hunting and on the range, where they get dropped a lot so they are all scratched up. Rest have never been an issue.
Relatively easy opened to clean too. I painted the Grendels to distinguish them, but it scratches off easy.
I still grab a few when they go on sale.

One of those things you didn't realize you needed

Written on Mar 18, 2023

I need hands free in the woods, so I can use GPS and machete in each hand, (or push heavy brush out of the way). The shouldered rifle always would slide off, really annoying. This keeps the rifle high on the shoulder freeing your hands. Only thing I don't like about it is the price.
I am coming back to get another for my camera bag, to keep the camera on my shoulder.

The "AR47" design is a compromise.

Written on Jun 26, 2022

The "AR47" design is a compromise. Three things: bolt, hammer spring and firing pin.
To fit a 7.62x39 casing in a bolt designed for 5.56NATO, something has to give if you want the ability to use Mil-spec parts (Certain parts like the bolt can never be mil-spec, of course.).
The Comblock ammo has a harder primer, so needs slightly longer firing pin, as Mr "Bad misfiring BCG" discovered. They should include with the 7.62x39 AR BCG, but they don't, but firing pin is not expensive. Finally, I bought a lower spring kit, but have not needed it yet. The hammer spring will have problems eventually and is part of this kit.

If you don't want to compromise, you need to go to a proprietary solution (CMMG) or an AR10 chassis, perhaps. They tend to be significantly more expensive.

I've been shooting this platform since 2016, sometimes I'll do 500 round mag dumps. Frankly, I ride my horses hard and put them away wet. I still get reasonable reliability for hog hunting. (I can also afford to keep a second AR in the truck as insurance.)

Avoid brand - no support, damages your ammo

Written on Sep 05, 2021

I have ASC mags for the Grendel which work ok. 2x5round and 1x10 round. I bought two ASC 15 round in Feb 2021 and spent four months looking for ammo. Finally got to the range in August and horrified to find BOTH new ASC 15 round magazines double feed so badly, it damages the brass. This is Hornaday SST, over $1.20 a round.

I contacted ASC and every time they promise to replace, but make no actual effort, even after providing everything, requested multiple times. It's like having health insurance.

I had planned to do ground hog hunting this fall in the swamp and needed the extra capacity. It can become dangerous if your gun jams. I always test my rifles in August to allow time to fix any issues before hunting season. When I'm out hunting, I don't have time to do gun checks at the range.

Well ASC pretty much destroyed my schedule by jerking me around for over a month of not providing ANY SUPPORT and I want you to know about it. I'm going to take their magazines down to the range after deer season and make them a target. At least I'll get some utility out of them.

I STRONGLY recommend Duramag, as I have experience they support their product after the sale based on owning 300BO, 556NATO 6.5Grendel and 7.62x39 AR, all Duramag (C Products).

Nice while it lasted - no support from Odin

Written on Aug 23, 2021

To be fair to Odin, was used in 7.62x39 AR shooting Wolf, Tula Barnual, etc ammo. Lasted about 3 years and 3000 rounds before the gas would no longer divert to move the BCG, regardless of setting. Took apart and soaked in cleaner for several days, didn't resolve. (I also stripped one of the barrel lock screws, may fault)

Contacted Odin via email about above as they post no phone number. Sent about 5 emails over the course of two months, with no response. I'm fine even if they tell me it might be out of warranty or I'm using it out-of-the-design spec, but I think they should at least respond, which is why I'm giving them three star (average) rank.

So it's a good product and works ok, but it seems like it proved to be a $80 throwaway part, which is too expensive for that role. I replaced with cheaper Sekins.

The only other comment is the front facing adjustment means you need to be mindful of handguard length vs gas system, as pistol length gas system may be too deep to permit adjustment without having to remove the handguard.
You are also much closer to the muzzle when making adjustments. Not negatives, just so you know what you are getting into.

Squeaks like a saddle

Written on Jul 21, 2021

Overall I like it. It's a nice change-up from the IWB when you gain a few pounds and that EDC space is now occupied by love handles. More comfortable than any IWB I've tried. Wear with fishing shirt, tails out, no one can tell. I am really impressed how small it feels on my hip.

It ride a little high, trigger to butt is either at the belt line or above, which is what I want, so the bottom does not poke out under the shirt tail. I really like that it rides very close to the body, the butt of the gun snug against my love handles.
Double thickness carry belts are a bit tight to slide on, but it will go on. This is one holster I'd say it's design allows for most any single thickness belt, not just EDC belts. I don't feel a lot of weight pulling my pants down like other holsters.
Use with Springfield EMP and it rides high, but it feels secure. Also use with Officer's 1911 and it's really made for this type of handgun. Both, the trigger is well covered at all times.
I do NOT think it would retain the weapon during vigorous physical activity, such as tumbling. I test holsters by walking on my hands, (unloaded of course), would not stay very long. This is because it's riding on the outside of your belt. Slip and fall on ice, or other less vigorous action, should stay put.
Only gripe is it squeaks as I move, creaks like riding a horse on leather saddle. Not sure if it'll go away in time. Not sure how loud it is to others, maybe I'm being paranoid? No one has seemed to notice.

Manufacturer response

Written on Jul 20, 2021

I wrote the earlier review about using in 7.62x39 and it not fitting, and received this response from the manufacturer. While I still would not buy knowing what I know, I am improving the rating,as they are correct, I'm not using in Mil-Spec, even though all the parts on the BCG except for the bolt are otherwise milspec. I have no interest in throwing anyone under the bus, only like to relay my experiences, which is why I'm posting this follow up...

Trybee Defense
"The cam pin is meant to fit any standard mil-spec bolt carrier and standard mil-spec bolt. Unfortunately there is no way for us to guarantee perfect fitment with parts that are not mil-spec like a 7.62x39 bolt. As long as the bolt followed mil-spec specifications then it should have accommodated this cam-pin. This was information provided to us by our product engineers:

“We’ve sold thousands of cam pins and that’s a first for us (i.e. Never heard of this issue before). Our cam pins are designed to work in MilSpec 5.56mm, .223 and 300 blackout configurations. We can’t guarantee it will work with non-MilSpec carriers with other calibers, such as 7.62x39. In fact, shooters often speak of needing to modify the cam pin in situations like this. We will always guarantee our parts for MilSpec 5.56mm, .223 and 300 BO configurations.”

As stated before, once I learned it was not suitable for my application I returned the part, so other than testing against two 7.52x38 AR-15's with different brand BCG's and finding neither

Arguably the best magazine available

Written on Jul 08, 2021

Reviewing Officer's model "compact" with dark coating. Model: 500-9C9B-9RD
I have four now and while it's buy once, cry once, it's happy days at the range. The coating is much like Teflon, so it glides in and out of the mag well. It's also coated on the inside too, smoothing round movement in the well. Also the steel appears thicker than normal, it's very rigid, no flex at all. The coating does not seem to make it slipperier when handling the magazine, so far.
Add to that it gives the Officer's 1911 an extra round (9) and my 9mm Dan Wesson ECO cycles very flawlessly. I put the OEM magazines in the gun safe.
The rubber boot (or floor plate) does stick out of the bottom, compared to the flush fit OEM magazines. I do not see that as an issue.
