All The Bells and Whistles Without The Crazy Price Tag

by Jeremy L., Gear Expert from IL, United States Written on October 29, 2015
Now that thermal monoculars and riflescopes are becoming more and more popular, the options available are getting even better. While I'm not 100% sure how long Pulsar has been in the thermal optics game, I can say without a doubt they know what they're doing with this Quantum HD19A model. As cliché' as it may sound, after using this exact unit on a hog hunt, it is an excellent bang for the buck.

It has a ton of features that you're looking for when using a thermal monocular as a means of spotting game. For starters, the lightweight glass filled nylon housing is surprisingly heavy duty and took several "oops" moments on my part without any sign of damage.

Things I like About The Pulsar Quantum HD19A:

-Great feature is the video out capability for filming your hunts.
-DC power in allows you to run the unit once AA battery power has drained. Perfect for glassing out of a car.
-Simple controls
-Quick shutter/lens cover twist function
-(2) 1/4in thread tripod adapters
-Runs on 4 AA's
-Side integral Picatinny rail for mounting IR lasers.
-Lower cost

So, I hastily bought the FLIR Scout II which was on sale for $1,750. I should have done more research because after I purchased it, I found the Pusar Quantum for exactly the same price but with TONS of better features. - The thermal resolution (384x288 Microbolometer) is much higher than the SCOUT...

Great Thermal for the $$

by Chuck, from NC, United States Written on November 21, 2016
I recently purchased the Pulsar Quantum HD19A 1-2X for glassing fields at night when I pig hunt. I was a little worried that I would not be able to see and ID targets with it since it has such a small objective however, I was shocked at how well I could see pigs, deer, and coyotes out to 300 yards and could make them out. I had used other thermals in the past both in civilian and military application and always liked them for making positive ID of my targets. I would suggest this light compact unit to anyone who is getting into night hunting where a lot of walking is required. I have used it in the last week in heavy fog and could still make out my targets. Battery life is good and I like the idea of AA batteries over the internal battery in some of the other models offered. AA batteries are not expensive and I can load the extra holder drop it in my pocket and hunt all night on 8 batteries. I will be buying more Pulsar products in the very near future.
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • Small objective
Best Used for:
  • Hunting 10yd - 300yds

Most underrated thermal out there

by hightech redneck, Verified Owner from AR, United States Written on September 30, 2016
For what you get this is the best thermal monocular money can buy. I only give it 4 stars because it is only 2x zoom. this is an "entry level monocular", but compared to the Flir it is clearer and less money.

Great for coyote hunting

by Terry, from IL, United States Written on February 25, 2016
I'm very impressed by this product for coyote hunting. I use it to scan for targets and ID with my nightvision scope. Only complaint is it eats batteries like I eat Chips Ahoy cookies! Animals cannot be ID'ed using this device unless rather close but heat signatures can be seen on coyote at approx 600 yards!

This is a great thermal imager. It has a good feature set for the price, including manual contrast and brightness controls. The images it produces are super. It would definitely recommend this thermal imager to anyone looking to get into thermal imagining.

Great tool to add for locating Hogs!

by Steve, from TX, United States Written on July 7, 2015
I was very happy to see that I could locate hogs way farther than this was rated for. The clarity was better than I expected. The only thing I would change is to have a neck strap added to make it more convenient to switch to my rifle.

Works just as well in day as it does at night.

Great entry to the Thermal optics!
Pros:
  • Light weight.
  • extra battery module included
Cons:
  • needs a neck strap
Best Used for:
  • locating game

Great Entry Thermal

by chic, Verified Owner from NV, United States Written on June 19, 2015
A nice little thermal viewer. The ergonomics are well done. It comes with a nice pouch and a spare battery holder (which is good since it's a unique removable style). The only things I don't like are the narrow 20 degree field of view and the screen leaving a lot of black space in the eyepiece. An eyepiece that seals around the eye a little better would be nice. I have another thermal viewer that has a 36 degree field of view that seems much more natural. Outside, 20 degrees would not be too bad, but inside, there is no peripheral vision. The screen looks like you are viewing a 2x3 inch screen 3-4 inches in front of your eye, rather than filling the field of view (admittedly, with the narrow field, you wouldn't want it to fill your eye's field of view). Like all thermal devices, there is a warm-up and calibrations. Scanning (more necessary with the narrow field of view) freezes when it re-calibrates, but you can change when it does that. For those not familiar with thermal, it can be used day or night, but is best when the surroundings are a significantly different temperature than the target. Obviously, it's more fantastic to be able to see at night.

Incredible.

by chris, from TX, United States Written on March 23, 2015
I bought this thing in order to find critters on the hunting lease. I have had a major problem with Coons, but sitting in your stand waiting for coons to show up, just to shoot them was starting to be a waste of time. Sometimes they'd come in, sometimes they wouldn't. So I bought this thing. WOW !!!! Forget waiting for critters to show up now....you take the war to the critters. I can spot coons 50 feet up in heavily thick trees at 80 yards. Things you would NEVER be able to see in the daytime, now I can see at midnight. You can see coons and squirrels INSIDE the tree in their burrows.

You can spot hummingbird sized birds, laying in their nests, at 70 yards. I decided to do some rabbit hunting......it was so easy, I gave up. It just wasn't any fun anymore. When you can spot a bunny at 200 yards, walk right up to him and shoot him, it just lost the appeal to me. Same with a few of my buddies who I let use it. After the first 3-4 bunnies....you just sort of lose interest because of just how easy they are to spot.

Most incredible thing I've ever used in the field. You will be amazed at whats really out there in the woods next to you, that you'd never know was there without this device.
Pros:
  • Everything
Cons:

Pulsar Quantum HD19A

by Robin Gilmore, Verified Owner from PA, United States Written on January 8, 2015
So many thermal devices out there, from a couple grand to super-costly. The Pulsars had good reviews everywhere, so I thought "well, if it stinks, I can return it". Wow - was I surprised! Seriously, this thing totally ROCKS! Great price, fast shipping, and it is definitely worth (more than) the money!
