What Are the 3 Major Parts of a Firearm?
The basic Gun Parts of all modern firearms are:
- Barrel - The tube that the bullet travels down.
- Action - The part of the gun that discharges the projectile by striking the primer.
- Stock - Used by the shooter to hold the firearm, and usually at least some part of the frame to support and connect the action and the barrel.
What is the Barrel of a Rifle?
The barrel of a rifle is the tube that the projectile travels down from the breech to the muzzle. A smoothbore barrel is found on shotguns, but a rifled barrel means that there are grooves and lands that spiral at a set interval. This interval is usually seen in a rotation-to-inch ratio, like 1:8, which means the bullet makes one full rotation in 8 inches of the barrel’s length.
Bolt-action rifles are usually quite difficult to change barrels on and typically require Gunsmithing Equipment. AR-pattern rifles are much easier to swap out since you can get a Complete Upper Receiver that includes everything from the barrel, the Charging Handle, Bolt Carrier Group, Gas Block, and all of the other upper receiver components.
