General Questions

What is a suppressor, and why is it regulated?
  • A suppressor is a device attached to a firearm that helps reduce noise and muzzle blast.
  • Suppressors are regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA), which requires additional paperwork, identity verification, and ATF approval before transferring. This process is similar to buying a firearm through a Federal Firearms License (FFL), although suppressors are subject to additional NFA regulations.

Who is Silencer Central, and why are they involved in my order?

  • OpticsPlanet partners with Silencer Central through their Suppressor Direct program.
  • Silencer Central manages the suppressor transfer process, including ATF paperwork, identity verification, document preparation, and shipping compliance right to your door.

Can I own a suppressor in my state?

  • Suppressor ownership is legal in many states, but not all. It is your responsibility to ensure suppressor ownership is legal where you live. If a suppressor cannot legally be transferred to your state, your order will not be completed.
  • For more information, please visit our Domestic Compliance policy page, which outlines various state restrictions.

Who do I contact if I have questions about the paperwork filing process?

  • For questions about the transfer process, including paperwork, fingerprints, ATF forms, approvals, transfer status, or shipping information, please contact Silencer Central directly at 877-752-2615 to speak with a representative dedicated to OpticsPlanet customers.

Do I need to have an FFL selected?

  • No. Silencer Central manages the transfer process and will guide you through all the required steps to ship your suppressor directly to your home.

What is the difference between an NFA Trust and Individual Registration?

  • Individual Registration means the suppressor is registered to one person, who is the only person legally authorized to possess it.
  • NFA Trust Registration allows multiple authorized individuals listed on the trust to legally possess the suppressor. Additional documentation, fingerprints, photos, and fees may apply.

How do I communicate an NFA Trust vs. Individual Registration request?

  • When selecting a suppressor, choose the option that matches your preferred registration type. Products designed for NFA Trust Registration will be clearly identified in the product title.
  • If you have any questions about purchasing a suppressor on OpticsPlanet.com, please contact the OpticsPlanet Customer Care team at 800-504-5897.
